Bloomsburg Scores 33 Fourth Period Points To Rally for Win

EAST STROUDSBURG—Bloomsburg University quarterback Jack Lydic (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) connected with Steve Burke (Mechanicsburg/Bishop McDevitt) for a five- yard touchdown pass with just 30 seconds remaining to lift the Huskies to a 40-37 come-from-behind win over East Stroudsburg University Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies, 3-2, 1-0 PSAC, trailed 24-7 heading into the fourth quarter before erupting for 33 points in the final period. The win also extended the Huskies PSAC East road winning streak to 14 games.

East Stroudsburg, 3-2, 0-1 PSAC, grabbed the early lead in the game when quarterback Jim Terwilliger scored on an 11-yard keeper to cap a seven play, 72-yard drive with 11:15 to play in the first period. The Warriors made it 14-0 early in the second period when Terwilliger scored his second rushing touchdown of the game, this one from eight-yards with 14:19 left before halftime.

After the Warriors extended their lead to 21-0 on a Terwiller 15-yard scoring pass to John Jeffries, the Huskies finally cracked the scoreboard when Mike Ceroli (Medford, NJ/Lenape) capped a 12-play, 73-yard scoring drive with a two run yard to make it 21-7 at halftime.

In the third period, Bloomsburg was driving for a potential score, but fumbled with the Warriors recovering. After the Bloomsburg defense forced a punt, Lydic was intercepted on the first play which set up a 28-yard field goal by Mark Brubaker with 10:48 left in the third to give East Stroudsburg a 24-7 advantage.

But, the Huskies continued to battle and the combination of Lydic to Burke clicked on a 17-yard scoring pass on the first play of the fourth period. However, the extra point was no good and Bloomsburg still trailed 24-13.

After a short kickoff return by the Warriors to their own 10-yard line, Terwilliger fumbled the ball into the endzone with the Huskies' Dominic Esgro (Carbondale/Lakeland) recovering for a score. The two-point pass failed and the Huskies trailed 24-19 with 14:43 left in the game.

On the ensuing drive, East Stroudsburg drove to the Huskies' 29-yard line before Tony Milone (Newton/Council Rock) forced Terwilliger to fumble with Aaron Zeamer (Columbia/Hempfield) recovering. The Huskies then drove 76 yards with Ceroli scoring from two-yards out to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the game. After the two-point conversion failed, the Huskies led, 25-24. A couple of big plays in the drive came from Lydic who threw 15 yards to Nick Kurtz (Coplay/Whitehall), 18 yards to Brad Bowman (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) and had a 22-yard shovel pass to Shaun Gaul (Catawissa/Southern Columbia).

However, Terwilliger quickly led the Warriors on another scoring drive, this one covering 68 yards in just four plays. He capped the drive off with a 33-yard scoring pass to Anthony Carfagno with 2:53 left to give East Stroudsburg a 31-25 lead with 2:53 left.

On the kickoff, the Huskies' Josh Heck (Hazleton/Hazleton) returned the ball 46 yards to the East Stroudsburg 47 yard line. On the next play, Lydic hit Burke with a 47-yard scoring pass to make it 32-31 after the extra point by Garrett Bloom (Sunbury/Shikellamy).

East Stroudsburg cam right back and regained the lead, 37-32, after Terwilliger engineered a 74 yards coring drive capped off by a 50-yard scoring pass to Jeffries with just 1:21 left in the game.

But, the Huskies' Greg McGhee (Phialdelphia/Cheltenham) returned the ensuing kickoff to the Huskies 30-yard line giving Bloomsburg a shot. Lydic then hit Nick Kurtz on three consecutive pass plays of 37, 11 and 17 yards putting the ball the East Stroudsburg five yard line. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, Lydic connected with Burke for the game-winner.

East Stroudsburg had one more shot with the ball, but Terwilliger fumbled with Paul Lin recovering.

In all the two teams combined for 46 fourth period points and 1,019 yards of total offense.

On the day, Lydic finished 21-30 with one interception for a career-high 345 yards and three scores, all in the fourth period. Kurtz, who cam e into the game with just 10 catches this season for 155 yards, finished this game with 11 total catches for 164 yards. Steve Burke, which just one catch coming into the contest, caught five passes for 93 yards and three scores. Mike Ceroli led the ground game with 82 yards and two scores.

East Stroudsburg's Terwilliger finished 28 of 36 for 376 yards and three scores.

Defensively, Bloomsburg was Shawn Butler (Newton/Council Rock) with 12 tackles and Eric Steffen (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) with nine.

Bloomsburg returns back home to Redman Stadium Oct. 11th to face Millersville at 1 p.m.
