Bloomsburg Downs Mansfield in Football Action

Game Stats, Play by Play

BLOOMSBURG—Freshman Josh Heck rushed for 105 yards and one score to lead Bloomsburg University (7-3, 5-1 PSAC East) to a 21-6 win over Mansfield University (8-2, 3-2 PSAC East) Saturday afternoon. The win clinches at least of a share of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division title for the Huskies.

Heck won the battle of freshmen running backs out-gaining Mansfield's Poohbear McNeal, 105 to 50. McNeal had been leading Division II in rushing with 179 yards per game. In all, the Bloomsburg defense limited the Mounties to 21 yards rushing and also had four sacks on the day.

Bloomsburg scored first in the game when Heck capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a five yard scoring run.

The Huskies made it 14-0 later in the first when quarterback Jack Lydic threw a three-yard scoring pass to tight end Luke Kuklick to cap a 31-yard drive after a short Mansfield punt.

Early in the second period the Huskies had its string of scoring in the red-zone snapped at 20 when Tim Oliver's 24-yard field goal attempted was tipped and went wide right.

Bloomsburg did add its point total midway through the period when Lydic hit Steve Burke with a 53-yard scoring pass. For Burke, it was his 10th touchdown catch of the season coming on just 16 receptions.

In the third period, the Mounties appeared to have broken through when quarterback Travis Motley hit Joe Bennett with a four-yard scoring pass. The play was nullified, though, on an ineligible man downfield call.

Mansfield only score came on a long 14-play, 89-yard drive capped off by a Motley to Bennett 12-yard scoring pass. The extra point was blocked making the final 21-6.

Lydic finished with 159 yards passing and two scores for the Huskies, while Motley threw for 269 and one score for Mansfield.

Defensively, Andre Turner had 12 tackles, six solo for Mansfield, while Eric Steffen had seven tackles, three solo, for Bloomsburg.

The Huskies close out their 2003 season at home with Indiana (PA), while Mansfield closes at home with West Chester.
