Bloomsburg Beats New Haven in Football Season OpenerBLOOMSBURG—Tailback Shaun Gaul rushed for a game-high 120 yards and one touchdown and quarterback Al West threw for three touchdowns to lead Bloomsburg University to a 30-17 win over the University of New Haven in the season opener for both teams. Both Gaul and West were making their first career starts for the Huskies. New Haven (0-1) jumped out in front in the first period after recovering a fumble by West at its own 26-yard line. Nine plays later the Chargers' Lars Anderson connected on a 26-yard field goal to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Bloomsburg (1-0) responded on its next drive going 65 yards in seven plays with West hitting Donny Patrick with a 28-yard scoring pass. Garrett Bloom's extra point gave Bloomsburg a 7-3 lead with 6:33 to play in the first. On New Haven's next drive the Chargers regained the lead on a 59-yard drive. Ashun Jackson capped the drive with a 13-yard run on a fourth and one play with 4:23 to play giving New Haven a 10-7 lead. The Huskies came right back and took the lead for good in the game putting together a 67-yard drive of its own. West was 2-3 on the series with both completions going to Nick Kurtz, the last gaining 16 yards for a score at the 2:13 mark of the first period. The extra point failed giving the Huskies a 13-10 lead after one period. The second period saw just a 23-yard field goal from the Huskies' Garrett Bloom which gave the home team a 16-10 lead at the break. In the third period the Huskies put the game away with West hitting Patrick with his second touchdown catch of the game, this one from 23-yards out giving Bloomsburg a 24-10 lead after the two-point conversion. Bloomsburg's final score came with 1:25 left in the period when Gaul capped a 62-yard drive with a two-yard run to make the score 30-10 heading into the final period. New Haven capped the scoring for the day when Martell Threadgill ran nine yards for a score with less than a minute to play. West, the former Berwick High School standout, finished 9-16 for a career-high 169 yards and three scores. Gaul rushed 17 times for his 120 yards, while freshman Josh Heck gained 114 yards on 15 carries. In all the Huskies gained 478 yards, including 309 on the ground. New Haven was led by quarterback Rob D'Innocenzio, who was 23-35 for 225 yards, but no scores. The Huskies will be idle next before playing Shippensburg on Sept. 13. New Haven will open at home with West Chester next week. |
