Bloomsburg Football Shutout for First Time Since 1998

BLOOMSBURG—Fullback John Kuhn rushed for a game-high 163 yards and one score leading Shippensburg University to a 21-0 win over Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon. The shutout was the first against Bloomsburg since the 1998 season, a span of 53 games. It was also the first time the Huskies have been shutout out at home since the 1993 season.

Shippensburg, 2-0, grabbed the early lead in the game when quarterback Rick Henshaw completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Ferguson with 3:52 left in the first period. The extra point failed and the Red Raiders held the early 6-0 lead.

Bloomsburg, 1-1, had trouble moving the fall in the rain and could generate no first downs in the first half and just minus two yards of offense.

Shippensburg later increased its lead to 14-0 in the second period when Kuhn rambled 10 yards for score to cap a 21-yard scoring drive. The drive was setup by an 11-yard punt by Bloomsburg deep in Red Raider territory. The two-point conversion was good on the play and Shippensburg led 14-0 with 8:40 to play in the first half.

The final score of the game came late in the second period when Henshaw hit Joel Gambel for a score with just 32 seconds remaining. The score was setup when Huskies' quarterback Al West fumbled at the Bloomsburg 18 yard line. Kuhn then ran 13 yards to the five, before Henshaw connected for the score. Ryan Rumberger's point after was good and the Red Raiders were up 21-0 at the break.

In the second half, the Huskies did manage a few drives into Shippensburg territory but came up empty each time. Bloomsburg was intercepted twice in the endzone and was stopped on a fourth down play at the Shippensburg 15-yard line late in the game.

Shippensburg's Henshaw finished the day 5-15 for 72 yards and two scores and two interceptions.

Bloomsburg will visit Lock Haven next week at 7 p.m.
