East Stroudsburg Beats Bloomsburg in PSAC East Showdown

BLOOMSBURG—Anthony Carfagno's four-yard scoring run with 50 seconds to play proved to be the difference as East Stroudsburg (5-0, 2-0 PSAC East) remained undefeated with a 30-24 win over Bloomsburg University (3-2, 0-1 PSAC East) on Saturday afternoon. The win was a showdown to two teams ranked in the top 20 nationally and in the top five in the NCAA Northeast Regional rankings.
The Warriors winning drive started at their own 30-yard line after the Huskies had tied the score with 2:33 to play. East Stroudsburg quarterback Jim Terwillger hit Tim Strenfel for 15 yards out to the ESU 45-yard line on the first play of the drive. Terwillger then connected with Evan Prall for 22 yards down to the Bloomsburg 33-yard line. A pass to Ben Culver for 19-yards moved the ball to the Bloomsburg 14 before Terwillger scrambled for 10 more to the Huskies' four yard line. Carfagno then scored on the next play to put the Warriors in front 30-24. However, the extra point was wide leaving Bloomsburg with time and some hope.
The Huskies' though, drove from their own 21 out to the their own 49 before Jack Lydic was intercepted by Matt Crispell at the Warriors' 27-yard line with 12 seconds to play to end the threat.
The Warriors wasted little time getting on the board to start the game taking the opening kickoff and marching 55 yards in six plays with Terwillger hitting Strenfel on a 22-yard scoring pass with 13:35 to play in the opening period.
Bloomsburg answered with a 10-yard scoring run by Mike Ceroli to cap a six-play, 60-yard scoring drive with 11:00 minutes to play in the first.
The Warriors regained the lead on their next possession settling for a 36-yard field Marc Brubacker after their drive stalled.
In the second period, the Warriors' stretched the lead to 10 points when Carfagno scored his first touchdown of the day, another four yard run to put the visitors in front 17-7.
Bloomsburg answered on its next series with Lydic scoring on a keeper from one yard out with 11:06 left in the second to make it 17-14. The drive was set up by a 74-yard kickoff return by Julius Brown.
The Warriors added on more score right before halftime when Terwillger hit Prall with seven yard scoring pass to give East Stroudsburg a 24-14 lead at halftime.
The Huskies' opened the third period with a 14-play, 70-yard scoring drive capped off by a 28-yard field goal from Garrett Bloom to climb within 24-17.
In the fourth period, the Huskies got the game-tying score when Lydic hit Steve Burke with a seven yard scoring pass with 2:33 to play setting up the game-winning drive by the Warriors.
In all, Terwillger was 22-34 for 328 yards with one interception and two touchdowns. Prall finished with a team-high seven catches for 93 yards and one score.
Bloomsburg's quarterback Jack Lydic was 23-36 for 268 yards with three interceptions and one touchdown.
The Huskies visit Kutztown next week, while the Warriors host Clarion.
