Bloomsburg Falls to Shippensburg in Football

SHIPPENSBURG —Shippensburg University scored 41 unanswered points on its way to a 48-10 win over Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon.
Shippensburg took the early lead in the game scoring on the first possession of the game with John Kuhn scoring from one yard for a 7-0 lead just 4:20 into the game.
Bloomsburg scored on it second possession of the first quarter putting together a 73-yard drive capped off by a 10-yard scoring run from Mike Ceroli (Medford, NJ/Lenape).
Later in the first period the Huskies caught a break when Greg McGhee (Philadelphia/Cheltenham) forced a fumble after a Bloomsburg punt with Jeremy Lightner (Fairview/Fairveiw) recovering the ball. The Bloomsburg drive then stalled at the Shippensburg 17-yard line forcing the Huskies to settle for a 37-yard field goal from Garrett Bloom (Sunbury/Shikellamy) making it a 10-7 game.
Shippensburg tied the game with a field goal from Jamie Reder from 18-yards out to make it 10-10 with 12:34 to play before half.
After the Red Raiders forced a Bloomsburg punt, quarterback Tony Gomez hit David Wilkerson with a 76-yard scoring pass to make it 17-10 in favor of the home team.
Bloomsburg then appeared to be marching towards a game tying score just before halftime. But, the Red Raiders' Mike Street intercepted Jack Lydic's (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) pass and returned it 92-yards for a score to give Shippensburg a 24-10 lead at halftime.
In the third period, the Huskies had the ball first and again appeared to be marching towards a score. However, Lydic was intercepted again with Terrance Askins who returned the ball to the Bloomsburg 34-yard line. On the first play, Gomez hit Pat Ferguson with a 34-yard scoring pass and 31-10 lead for the Red Raiders.
Shippensburg added a 22-yard field goal from Reder later in the third period, then Gomez scored from one-yard out early in the fourth period for a 41-10 lead. The Red Raiders capped the day's scoring with a 25-yard run from Walter Crump with 4:14 to play.
Ceroli lead the Huskies (1-1) with 99 yards rushing on 15 carries and scored once, while on defense, Matt Smith (York/Central York) and Rodney Johnson (Philadelphia/George Washington) each had seven tackles.
Shippensburg (3-0) was led by Kuhn who gained 92 yards on 21 carries and Gomez who was 5-8 for 188 yards and two scores.
Bloomsburg will have its home opener on Sept. 18th when it takes on Lock Haven at 1:30 p.m.
