BLOOMSBURG—Quarterback Jack Lydic (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns and tailback Jamar Brittingham (Levittown/Neshaminy) gained 261 all-purpose yards and scored twice to lead Bloomsburg University (3-0) to a 49-21 win over Shippensburg University (1-2) Saturday afternoon.
Lydic's touchdown throws were for 33, 62, 34 and 25 yards and were one shy of the school-record he shares with several other Bloomsburg quarterbacks. Brittingham finished with 198 yards on the ground and had 63 yards in pass receptions.
The Huskies scored on the first drive of the game with Brittingham scored on a 10-yard run to cap a 12-play drive putting the home team in front 7-0.
Shippensburg tied the game just 15 seconds into the second period when Walter Crump scored on an 18-yard run to cap a 70-yard drive, then took a 14-7 later midway through the period when Tony Gomez hit Kyle Fogarty with a four yard scoring pass.
The Huskies tied the game on its ensuing drive with Lydic tossing the first of his four touchdown passes to Donny Patrick (Shenandoah/Hazleton), this one from 33-yards out to make it 14-14.
After the Bloomsburg defense forced a three and out, Lydic threw a short pass to Brittingham who ran 62-yards down the sideline for a score to put the Huskies in front 21-14 at the break.
Bloomsburg's defense came up with a score on the opening drive of the third period when Marcus Waddy (Philadelphia/Frankford) scooped up a fumble and went 55-yards for a touchdown to make it 28-14. After another three and out by Shippensburg, the Huskies made it 35-14 when Lydic hit Patrick again for a score, this time from 34-yards out.
Shippensburg trimmed the deficit back to 35-21 later in the third period when quarterback Rick Henshaw hit David Green for a score from 28-yards out with 3:57 left in the period.
Bloomsburg later added a 25-yard scoring pass from Lydic to Brahin Bilal (Philadelphia/Lincoln) and then a two-yard run by Jay Collins (Levittown/Neshaminy) which made the final 49-21.
In all, Lydic was 15-23 for 297 yards with no interceptions as the Huskies finished the day with 569 yards of total offense.
Walter Crump led the Red Raider offense with 106 yards rushing and one score.
The Huskies face Lock Haven next week, while Shippensburg hosts Millersville.
NOTES: Bloomsburg honored its 1985 football team at halftime of the game on the 20th anniversary of its winning the PSAC championship and advancing to the NCAA national semi-finals….Brittingham is just 20 yards shy of moving into 10th place on the school's all-time rushing list. In just 13 career games, the sophomore has gained 1,519 yards.
