Football Prepares for Sping Practice

March 31, 2005

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University football team will begin preparations for the 2005 season when it opens spring practice on Thursday. The Huskies were scheduled to open spring practice on Tuesday, but due to inclement weather, will start practice on March 31st.

Bloomsburg finished 7-3 last season, with all three losses coming to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) playoff teams. The Huskies also finished 4-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division, good enough for third overall.

Offensively, Bloomsburg looks to continue to run the ball effectively in 2005. Jamar Brittingham (Levittown/Neshaminy) returns after breaking Bloomsburg's freshmen rushing record last season with 991 yards on the ground, while Josh Heck (Hazleton/Hazleton) is back after red-shirting in 2004. Heck rushed for 790 yards and four scores two seasons ago. Opening up the holes for Bloomsburg's one-two punch will be All-American tackle Jahri Evans (Philadelphia/Frankford) along with returning starters John Moser (Newmanstown/ELCO), Bryan Scruggs (Media/Sun Valley), and Wynton Shelton (Chester/Penncrest).

Jack Lydic (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) returns for his third season as Bloomsburg's top signal caller and will look to receivers Greg Masters (Athens/Athens) and Donny Patrick (Hazleton/Hazleton). Masters had 13 catches last season while Patrick returns after sitting out in 2004. Tight ends Brad Bowman (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) and Luke Kuklick (North Wales/North Penn) also return to the mix in 2005 after catching a combined 18 balls last season.

Defensively, Bloomsburg will be led upfront by All-PSAC selections Scott Keating (Lansdale/Lansdale Catholic) and Todd White (Union, NJ/Union). Rodney Johnson (Philadelphia/George Washington), Bloomsburg's top returning tackler, will head the linebacking core while the upperclassmen trio of Gabe Robinson (Albrightsville/Jim Thorpe), Tyler Trettin (Hershey/Hershey) and Ty Ulrich (Milton/Milton) will patrol the secondary. Garrett Bloom (Sunbury/Shikellamy) will also resume placekicking duties in 2005.

The Huskies will practice on Tuesday's, Friday's, and Saturday's through April 23rd and will wrap up their spring practice on the 23rd with their annual Maroon and Gold game scheduled for at 11:00 a.m. at Redman Stadium.
