Bloomsburg University Holds Spring Football Game

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University football team held their annual Maroon and Gold spring football game, with the gold squad winning a defense struggle 6-3 at Bloomsburg High School Stadium on Saturday morning.

The Maroon team got out to a quick start as quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg/Southern Columbia) hit wide out Kyle Ream (Elliottsburg/West Perry) on a 37-yard reception on the game's opening play. However, the drive would stall for the maroon team, as would the Gold team's first drive of the contest. The Maroon team would get on the scoreboard on their second drive with a Jon Koenig (Pine Grove/Pine Grove) 27-yard field goal. The scoring drive was highlighted by a 41-yard run by tailback Kyle Passeri (Peckville/Valley View/Bucknell).

The Gold squad would answer with a scoring drive of their own, as Koenig hit another field goal, this time from 41- yards out to tie the game at three. The key play in the drive was a 29 pass completion from quarterback Andrew Flogel (Levittown/Neshaminy) to wide receiver Keter Crosby (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) who made a fingertip catch along the sidelines to ensure the pass completion.

After both teams failed to mount scoring drives, the gold team ended the first half with a 15-play scoring drive that was capped off once again by a Koenig field goal, this time from 31 yards out. Running back James Sweeting (Hughesville/Hughesville/Liberty) led the team by himself on the drive, carrying the ball eight times for 48 yards.

In the second half, the Maroon team made one more push for the end zone after Latorre led the squad to inside the Gold 10-yard line. However, the Gold squad stopped the scoring threat after Andre Ellis (Lancaster/Manheim) broke up a Latorre pass in the end zone on fourth down.

For the game, Latorre was 15-25 for 122 yards with an interception, while Sweeting was the game's leading rusher with 55 yards on 11 carries. Defensively, Jeff Owlsey (Aston/Sun Valley) and Colt Greer (Birdsboro/Exeter Twp.) each had interceptions.

Bloomsburg will open its 2008 season against Ashland (OH) on August 30th at 1:00 p.m.
