Bloomsburg University Football Tied for 25th in AFCA Preseason Poll

BLOOMSBURG- The Bloomsburg University football team is tied for 25th in the 2008 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Huskies are coming off of a 7-3 season where they finished second in the PSAC Eastern Division, are tied with Virginia Union at number 25.

Defending national champion Valdosta State enters the season ranked first, while 2006 national champion Grand Valley State is ranked second. Northwest Missouri State, North Alabama, and PSAC West rival California (Pa.) round out the top five. Defending PSAC East champion West Chester is ranked 16th, while PSAC West runner-up Indiana (Pa.) comes in at 21st.

The Huskies opening opponent for 2008, Ashland (Oh.), is ranked number 15.

Bloomsburg returns 12 starters from last season, led by junior quarterback Dan Latorre (Elysburg/Southern Columbia), wide receiver Kyle Ream (Elliottsburg/West Perry), defensive end Jon Ochs (Wind Gap/Nazareth) and cornerback Jesse Cooper (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.).

Latorre enters his third season under center for the Huskies following a 2007 campaign where he threw for 1,643 yards and 10 touchdowns. With the departure of PSAC Offensive Player of the Year Jamar Brittingham, Latorre will be counted on to provide consistency to an offense that ranked first in the PSAC in scoring offense last year.

Ream had a breakout 2007 season, finishing with 29 catches for 463 yards and four touchdowns. Ochs finished with 27 tackles, including six for loss, tied for the team lead. Ochs and Ream will serve as the Huskies captains in 2008.

Cooper emerged in his first season as a starter finishing 4th on the team in tackles and tied for the team lead in interceptions with two, both of which he returned for touchdowns.

Bloomsburg opens the season on August 30th when they travel to Ashland (Oh.) for a 1:00 p.m. start. The Huskies return to Bloomsburg for their home opener against California, (Pa.) on September 6th. That game will kick-off at 12:00 p.m. at the newly remodeled Redman Stadium.
