Bloomsburg 1999 Football Awards Handed Out

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University football team held their annual banquet at Magee's Main Street Inn to hand out awards honoring the team's key contributors. Awards honoring the team's Most Valuable Players, as well as for servic,e were handed out during the gathering.

Receiving the Service Player Award for excellence on the practice squad were freshmen Rashaud Kearny (Scotland/Scotland) on offense and Tony Milone (Newtown/Council Rock) and Eric Steffen (Catawissa/Southern Columbia) on defense.

Dorian Thompson (Warrington/C.B. East) was the recipient of the John S. Devlin Big Hit Award after the sophomore linebacker compiled 45 tackles, 25 unassisted, in 11 games played. He also made two tackles for a loss and broke up one pass.

The Ron Morgan Unsung Hero Award went to sophomore fullback Doug Werner (Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) after he was used primarily as a blocking back. He opened up running lanes all season helping the Huskies to 2,214 team rushing yards. He also carried the ball 32 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games played. His average of 4.5 yards per carry placed him fourth on the team in that category.

Junior tailback Steve Eichert (Jenkintown/Jenkintown) received the Dr. Lou Mingrone Special Teams Award for compiling 809 kickoff and 129 punt return yards on a combined 53 returns. His longest kickoff return was 47 yards, while his longest punt return was 45 yards. He also averaged 94.3 rushing yards and 194.9 all-purpose yards per game in 10 games this season. Eichert also reached the end zone three times this year.

Senior defensive lineman Justin Vent (Bedford/Bedford) was named the Frank Sheptock Defensive Most Valuable Player. In 11 games played, the co-captain made 53 tackles, 29 unassisted. He also made 15 tackles for a loss and broke up four passes. Vent also led Bloomsburg in quarterback sacks with five.

The Bob Tucker Offensive Most Valuable Player Award was awarded to senior wide receiver Matt Wilson (Milton/Milton) after he was the Huskies' top receiver making 64 receptions for 1,345 yards and 16 touchdown catches. He averaged 122.3 receiving yards per game and had a 90-yard touchdown reception to break the school record for longest touchdown catch. Wilson topped off his MVP season by being named to the All-PSAC first team as well as participating in the Snow Bowl, the Division II all-star football game held in Fargo, ND.

The Bloomsburg captains for the 2000 football season were also named last evening, as junior wide receiver Mike Lelko (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) and junior defensive lineman Brain Sims (Dowingtown/Dowingtown) picked up the honors.
