BLOOMSBURG—11 Bloomsburg University football players were named All-PSAC for the Eastern Division in voting by the coaches with four players earning first team honors.
Named to the first team offense were Manny Henrie (Berwick/Berwick HS), Matt Wilson (Milton/Milton HS), while Justin Vent (Bedford/Bedford HS) and Tom Maxwell (Wilkes-Barre/Pittston Area HS) were named to the defensive team. Earning second team honors on offense were Matt Russell (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge HS), Jeff Smith (Pitman, NJ/Pitman HS), Mike Lelko (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg HS), and Steve Eichert (Jenkintown/Jenkintown HS). Named second team All-PSAC defense were Brian Sims (Downington/Downington HS),Tom Boop (Berwick HS), Jeremiah Dyer (Berwick/Berwick HS), and Rudy Garcia (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin HS).
Henrie, a junior offensive guard, helped the Huskies rush for 201. 3 yards per game, fourth best in the PSAC this season. With Henrie leading the way, the Huskies also averaged a PSAC-best 469.0 yards per game of total offense.
Wilson, a senior wide receiver, finished second on the team in receptions with 64 for a team-high 1,345 yards. His 16 touchdown receptions set a Bloomsburg single-season record, breaking the old mark of 15 by Ron Lelko in 1996. Wilson finished second in the PSAC in yards per game with 122.3 and seventh in receptions per game with 5.82. His two big games of the year were against Millersville when he caught seven passes for a career-high 196 yards and two scores and against East Stroudsburg when he hauled in 11 passes for 100 yards and one score.
Wilson has been invited to play in the Snow Bowl, the Division II all-star football game in Fargo, ND.
Vent, a senior defensive end, finished tied for third on the team in tackles with 53, including 33 solo stops. He also had five sacks, including three against Edinboro and 15 tackles for loss, 10th best in the PSAC. Against both Edinboro and Millersville this season he totaled nine tackles.
Vent had been previously named All-PSAC second team in 1997 and 1998.
Maxwell, a senior linebacker, missed the last game and half due to injury, but still finished with 50 tackles, 24 of them solo. He also had one sack and seven tackles for loss and two pass breakups. He is one of the toughest tacklers in the PSAC.
Russel, a junior center, was one of the mainstays for the Huskies' offensive line which led the conference in both first downs with 270 and in third down conversions percentage with a mark of 47.1 (65-138). This is his first selection to an All-PSAC team.
Smith, a junior tackle, earned his first All-PSAC selection in 1999. As a starter, he helped the Huskies average 36.4 points per game, third best in the PSAC.
Lelko, a junior wide receiver, led the Huskies in receptions with 75 for 980 yards and 10 touchdowns. He finished third in the PSAC in receptions per game with 6.82 and seventh in yards per game with 89.1. He needs just 18 catches next season to surpass the Bloomsburg career record of 185 receptions by Buck Eardley. Lelko was a first team All-PSAC selection in 1998.
Eichert, a junior tailback, had a great season despite missing one full game due to injury. For the year, he rushed 154 times for 943 yards, eighth best in the PSAC, and three touchdowns. He also led the PSAC in all-purpose yards with 194.9 per game. His best rushing game of the year was against Shippensburg when he gained a career-high 190 yards on 29 carries and scored once in a 36-28 Bloomsburg victory.
Boop, a senior placekicker, converted 36 of 44 extra point attempts and was good on seven of 16 field goal tries this season. For his career, Boop finished as the Huskies' all-time leader in extra points with 139, third best in PSAC history.
Sims, a junior defensive lineman, made 35 tackles, 16 solo for the year. He had three sacks and 10 tackles for loss during the year with one pass breakup and one fumble recovery.
Dyer, a sophomore linebacker, led the Huskies in tackles with 61 despite missing a game due to injury. Of 61 tackles, 27 were solo stops. He also had one pass breakup and one forced fumble.
Garcia, a freshman defensive back, was sixth on the Huskies in tackles with 48, 36 of them solo stops. He also made three interceptions, had three pass breakups and one fumble recovery for the Huskies in 1999.
