BLOOMSBURG—Wide receiver Matt Wilson, playing in his final game, caught three touchdown passes, including a 90-yarder, to lead Bloomsburg University to a 65-16 win over Edinboro University Saturday afternoon in the season finale for both teams.
Bloomsburg ends the season 7-4, while Edinboro finishes 3-8.
The Huskies opened the scoring on the game's first series when they marched 70 yards in eight plays capped by Tom Boop's 18-yard field goal with 12:22 to play. Bloomsburg made it 10-0 when Wilson caught the first of his three scores, a 22-yarder from Eric Miller, with 7:47 left to play in the first.
Edinboro broke through the scoring column with 2:55 remaining in the first when Sean Nicholas connected on a 35-yard field goal to cap a 10 play, 50-yard drive. The Fighting Scots tied the game at 10-10 with 44 seconds left in the first period when Bernard Henry scored on a 47-yard catch and run pass from Jack Davis.
That would be as close as Edinboro would get the rest of the game. In the second period, the Huskies' Marques Glaze scored in a one yard run with 7:48 to play in the half to cap a short, 34-yard drive. Miller then connected with Wilson on a 48-yard touchdown pass to cap a one play-48 yard drive with 5:17 left. Wilson's third and final touchdown catch was a 90-yard catch and run from Miller with 1:12 left in the half to make the score 31-10. The touchdown catch was the 16th of the season for Wilson setting a Bloomsburg single-season touchdown reception mark. Ron Lelko set the old record of 15 touchdown receptions in a season in 1996.
Edinboro closed to within 15 points just before halftime when it drove 71 yards in six plays to score with 13 seconds left in the half. Running back Stephane Lubin caught a 13-yard pass from Davis to make it 31-16 at the break.
In the third period, after Bloomsburg's Toyae Berry intercepted a pass deep in Edinboro territory and personal foul on the Fighting Scots gave the Huskies the ball at the four-yard line, Glaze went in for his second score of the day to make it 38-16. Later in the third, fullback Doug Werner scored on a two-yard run to make it 45-16, before Miller scored from one-yard out with three minutes left in the third to make it 52-16 at the end of three periods.
In the fourth, Mike Lelko caught a seven yard pass from Miller to make it 58-16 and Berry ended the scoring when he returned an interception 80 yards for a score with Chris Thompson connecting on his first career extra point.
For the day, Miller was 12 of 20 for 292 yards, one interception and four touchdowns. He had a string of 111 passes without an interception ended when Dan Caro stepped in front of one his throws in the second period. He also set a Bloomsburg single-season completion percentage record finishing the year with a mark of 63.3 percent (171 of 270). Glen McNamee set the old mark of 60.5 percent in 1996. Miller also just missed the Huskies' single-season record for touchdowns finishing one off the record of 26 and 200 yards shy of the Bloomsburg single-season passing
yards record of 2,771.
On the ground, the Huskies' Steve Eichert rushed 23 times for 167 yards, while defensively, Keith Freeman made 13 tackles, 10 of them solo. Also, senior Justin Vent made nine tackles, three of them sacks for losses totaling 26 yards.
