EAST STROUDSBURG—Marques Glaze ran for a four-yard score with 4:33 left in the fourth quarter to seal a 27-21 Bloomsburg win over East Stroudsburg Saturday. With the win, Bloomsburg head coach Danny Hale tied A.K. Aldinger's 94-year old record for all-time winningest Bloomsburg University head football coach. Aldinger ended his Bloomsburg career in 1905 with 50 wins.
The Huskies had held the Warriors scoreless through three quarters, but East Stroudsburg pulled within seven with two fourth quarter touchdowns.
Both teams had been kept from the end zone until junior quarterback Eric Miller found senior receiver Matt Wilson for a nine-yard touchdown connection with10:36 to go in the second quarter. Miller was five-for-five on the drive for 53 yards. Wilson had 11 catches for 100 yards. Miller was 27-33 for 280 yards and two touchdowns.
In the third quarter, the Huskies, with the help of two drive-sustaining penalties by East Stroudsburg, pulled ahead 14-0 when Miller found junior Mike Lelko for a 14-yard touchdown toss. Junior running back Steve Eichert, back after missing two games with a hip injury, ran six times for 44 yards on the drive. Eichert finished with 132 yards on 17 carries. Lelko had 10 catches for 124 yards.
Later in the third quarter, sophomore running back Arrastene Henry, also returning from an injury, ran for a three-yard score giving the Huskies a 21-0 lead going into the fourth quarter. Bloomsburg had five plays go for 10 yards or more on the 71-yard drive. Henry ended the day with 99 yards on 18 carries.
East Stroudsburg made it a game in the fourth quarter, though.
After the Warriors' Shawn Foltz recovered a fumbled snap at the Bloomsburg 25, East Stroudsburg quarterback Jeremy Palm found John Kotarsky on fourth-and-10 for a 24-yard gain to the one-yard line. Stewart Ford carried the final yard and got the Warriors on the board with 11:08 to go in the game.
On the ensuing kickoff, Matt Wilson returned the ball 28 yards before fumbling. East Stroudsburg's Brian Holkovic covered it and the Warriors started again at the Bloomsburg 32. East Stroudsburg converted on a third-and-two and then Palm hooked up with Kotarsky again. This time, Kotarsky made it to the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown catch that put East Stroudsburg within seven with 8:32 to go.
Bloomsburg came right back on the next drive and marched 70 yards with Glaze's touchdown capping the eight-play affair. Seventeen-yard runs by Henry and sophomore fullback Doug Werner, and a 20-yard pass from Miller to Wilson were key on the drive. A missed extra point made it 27-14 with 4:33 to go.
East Stroudsburg was not done, however. Matt Kacanda returned Tom Boop's kick 40 yards to give the Warriors good field position at their 44. Palm completed passes to Stewart Ford (24 yards) and Kotarsky (31 yards, and stopped again at the Bloomsburg 1 yard line) before taking it in from a yard out with 3:40 to go.
Trailing 27-21 with one timeout, East Stroudsburg kicked deep and Bloomsburg started at its own 12-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Steve Eichert broke off a 41-yard run into Warrior territory. The Huskies were then able to run out the clock with the help of conversions on third-and-seven and third-and-one.
Bloomsburg moved to 5-4 overall, 3-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division. The Huskies host Mansfield for Parents' Day on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
