KUTZTOWN—It was another wild contest, which came down to the final two minutes, as Bloomsburg University defeated Kutztown University, 42-33, in college football action Saturday afternoon. It was the sixth time in the last games the Huskies have scored more than 36 points in a game dating back to last season.
Bloomsburg improved to 3-2, 1-0 in the PSAC East, while Kutztown fell to 1-3, 0-1 in the PSAC.
Kutztown opened the scoring in the game, taking the game's opening kickoff and marching 74 yards in 11 plays with Tony Robertson catching an 11-yard pass from Josh Warren. The extra point was blocked by the Huskies' Keith Freeman making 6-0.
The Golden Bears extended the lead to 9-0 when Duane Wurley connected on a 27 yard field goal with 11:27 left to play in the first half. The Huskies, though, would cut into the lead later in the period when Arrastene Henry (Philadelphia/Geo. Washington HS) scored from 10 yards out with 8:21 left. Tom Boop's (Berwick/Berwick HS) PAT made 9-7, Kutztown. The Huskies took the lead with 4:14 left in the half when Matt Wilson (Milton/Milton HS) caught a 60-yard pass from Eric Miller (Clarks Summit/Abington Heights HS) to make it 14-9 with the PAT. Bloomsburg extended its lead to 22-9 a minute later when Rudy Garcia (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) stepped in front of a Warren pass and returned it 32 yards for a score.
Kutztown, though, trimmed the deficit to 22-16 when Warren scampered 14 yards for a score with just seven seconds left before halftime.
In the third period, the Golden Bears took their first lead since early in the second frame when Yorel Prosser capped a nine play, 57 yard drive with an 11 yard run with 10:55 to play in the third. Kutztown stretched the lead to four, 26-22, with a 35 yard field goal from Wurley with 1:25 left in the third period.
Bloomsburg took the lead for good in the fourth period when Wilson caught his second TD pass of the game, this one a 40-yarder, capping a three-play, 57-yard scoring drive making it 29-26, Bloomsburg. After a Marques Glaze 2 yard run made it 36-26, Bloomsburg, the Golden Bears rallied once again.
Robertson caught his second scoring pass of the day, this one from 10 yards out making it 36-33 with 4:44 left to play. Kutztown elected to kick deep and try and force a punt. However, the Huskies were able to take off all but the game's final 17 seconds from the clock and scored an insurance touchdown in the process. Miller capped a 72-yard, 11 play drive with a one yard run to make the final, 42-33.
Miller finished the day15-29 for 259 yards, one interception and two touchdowns. Wilson caught six passes for 155 yards and two scores, while Henry rushed 13 times for 73 yards and one score.
For Kutztown, Warren was 25 of 42 for 255 yards, two interceptions and two touchdowns.
The Huskies host Millersville Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m. in its annual homecoming game.
