LOCK HAVEN—The high-scoring Bloomsburg University football team was up to the task once again Saturday night beating Lock Haven University, 44-24, while racking up nearly 500 yards in total offense. Wide receiver Mike Lelko had a big game for the Huskies with 8 catches for 117 yards and three touchdowns.
Lock Haven took the early lead in the game getting a 42 yard field goal from Matt Mapes with 5:26 left in the first period capping a five play drive.
The Huskies took the lead for good on the first play of the second period when Eric Miller hit Lelko with a five yard scoring pass. The point after failed giving the Huskies a 6-3 lead.
Bloomsburg increased its lead to 13-3 later in the period, taking advantage of a Bald Eagle fumble. Miller hit Matt Wilson on a 43 yard scoring strike to complete a two play scoring drive. On its next possession, the Huskies again needed just two plays to score. Tailback Arrastene Henry ran 57 yards, on his first carry of the game, to the Lock Haven one yard line setting up a one yard touchdown run for Marques Glaze making it 20-3.
Lock Haven cut into the Bloomsburg lead on an eight yard scoring pass from Ed Galiczynski to tight end Jason Kundtz late in the second period making it 20-10 at halftime. Both teams had chances to score right before halftime, but the Huskies were intercepted in the end zone and the Bald Eagles had time run out before they could get off a play deep in Bloomsburg territory.
In the third period the Huskies took advantage of another Lock Haven turnover to make it 23-10 on a 24 yard field goal from Tom Boop. Lock Haven made it 23-17 with 5:42 left to play in the third period when Jamie Allen's five yard run capped an eighty yard scoring for the Bald Eagles.
The Huskies, however, answered back on the ensuing drive with Miller hitting Lelko with a five yard pass to make it 29-17 after the two point pass failed.
In the fourth period, Lock Haven made it 29-24 when Galiczynski hit Matt Kerstetter with a 15 yard scoring strike. But that would be as close as the Bald Eagles would get in the game. With 8:41 left to play, Lelko caught his third scoring pass from Miller, this one 18 yards out to make it 37-24 after the two point pass.
Bloomsburg closed out the game's scoring when Jamison McLaughlin scored from five yards out with 1:14 left to play to make the final, 44-24.
