Huskies Fall to New Haven in Football Opener

BLOOMSBURG—Quarterback Jason Barnett threw for 376 yards and six touchdowns to lead New Haven University to 47-37 win over Bloomsburg University in the season opener for both teams.

In the game, the two teams combined for 1,065 yards of total offense, while committing just one turnover each.

New Haven got on the board firstwhen Luigi Amasino sacked Bloomsburg quarterback Eric Miller in the endzone with 13:08 left in the first. The Chargers made it 9-0 later in the first when Elvert Eden caught the first of Barnett's six TD tosses, a 42-yarder with 10:17 left in the first.

The Huskies got on the board later in the first period when junior Steve Eichert scored his first career touchdown on a 12-yard run with 4:41 left. The PAT failed leaving the Huskies with a 9-6 deficit.

The Chargers made it 16-6 at the end of the first half when Eden caught his second TD pass of the game, this one a 35-yarder to cap an 8-play, 80-yard drive.

Bloomsburg rallied and took the lead with scores on three of its possession in the second period. A 32-yard field by Tom Boop made it 16-9, before Matt Wilson caught a 54-yard scoring pass from Miller tying the game at 16-16. The Huskies took their only lead of the game with 1:58 left in the half when Boop connected again from

18 yards out to make it 19-16.

The lead was short-lived, however, as the Chargers moved 71 yards in six plays, capped by Barnett hitting Ketric Barnes with an 18-yard scoring pass with 17 seconds left in the half.

In the second half, the Chargers made it 30-19 when Barnett connected for the second time with Barnes, this time from 57 yards out. A John Thomas 41 yard field goal made it 33-19 with 7:40 left in the third, before the Huskies' Eric Miller scored on a one-yard run to make it 33-25.

In the fourth period, Miller scored his second TD of the game on another one-yard run to pull the Huskies to within 33-31 after the missed two-point conversion. Two more Barnett touchdown passes, one 66-yards to Eden and one of two yards to Dawud Hanif gave the Chargers a 47-31 lead with 7:08 left to play. The Huskies, though, made one more march downfield with Millers capping a nine-play, 80-yard drive with a four-yard pass to Allen Lechthaler with 3:17 to play.

Barnett finished the day17 of 32 for 376 yards and one interception. Eden led the Chargers with 10 catches for 240 yards and three scores. On the ground, Corey Jones gained 106 yards on 17 carries.

For the Huskies, Miller was 27 of 41 for a career-high 415 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Lelko caught 10 passes for 126 yards to lead Bloomsburg receivers.

The Huskies host Shippensburg next week, while New Haven visits Clarion.
