BLOOMSBURG—Steve Eichert rushed for a career-high 190 yards and one touchdown to lead Bloomsburg University to a 36-28 win over Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon. Eichert totaled 271 yards of total offense with 81 yards gained on kickoff returns. The Bloomsburg defense also forced six turnovers, including five fumbles, two of them deep in Bloomsburg territory.
Bloomsburg opened the game's scoring with a 37-yard field goal from Tom Boop to camp an eight-play, 60 yard drive. Tight end Brian Sullivan caught two passes in the drive, one for 22 yards and one for 19 yards.
In the second period, Doug Werner scored on a one-yard run to cap a 12-play, 91 yard drive to give the Huskies a 9-0 after the missed extra point.
Later in the second, quarterback Eric Miller scored on a 13-yard run to make it 16-0, before the Red Raiders got a 30 yard run from Nate Robinson to make it 16-6 with 1:48 left in the half.
But, the Huskies marched right down the field, needing just six plays to cover 76 yards to score again before halftime. Marques Glaze scored on a two yard touchdown rush with 25 seconds left to cap a drive which saw Eichert carry four times for 60 yards, including a 40 yard run, to set up the scoring run.
Bloomsburg scored on its first possession of the second half when Eichert scored from 14 yards out to cap a five play scoring drive to give the Huskies a 30-6 lead.
The Red Raiders then began a comeback when Jeremy Brubaker scored on a two-yard run capping a 28 yard drive, set up by a Miller interception, with 16 seconds left in the third period. On the Huskies next possession, Miller was intercepted again, with Melvin Scott catching a 15 yard pass from Chris Gicking to make it 30-18 after a missed extra point. Gicking to Scott connected again later in the fourth period on another 15 yard scoring pass to make it 30-25, Bloomsburg, with 7:40 left to play.
On the ensuing drive for the Huskies, Miller connected with Matt Wilson on a 52-yard touchdown play to make it 36-25 with 4:41 left. Wilson's catch came between two Shippensburg defenders who he then out-raced to the endzone.
Shippensburg got a 32-yard field goal from Craig Lough with 2:28 left to make it 36-28 forcing the Red Raiders to try an on-side kick. The on-side was good, but on their first play after recovering, Gicking was intercepted by Toyae Berry and allowing the Huskies to run out the clock.
