Field Hockey Players Earn National Academic Honors

BLOOMSBURG—Six members of the Bloomsburg University field hockey team were named to the 2000 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II Academic Squad. The team is formed of players who have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 and who are starters or key reserves to their respective teams.

The six Huskies named to the team are Krista Engle (Liverpool/Greenwood), Diane Fetzko (Kreamer/Middleburg), Liz Martin (New Holland/Garden Spot), Marlea Parlton (Langhorne/Neshaminy), Kristy Roadarmel (Orangeville/Millville) and Heather Weikel (Middleburg/Middleburg). These players helped Bloomsburg to a record of 16-3, 6-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), and a spot in the PSAC playoffs this past season.

For Engle, a senior, this is the third straight season that she has been named to the team. Engle played in all 19 games for the Huskies and scored a team-high 14 goals to go along with six assists for a total of 34 points. Her 34 points also led the team. Engle was named All-PSAC first team and led the team with 1.79 points per game. She was also named first team All-American in Division II by the NFHCA in 2000.

For her career, Engle finished with 36 goals, 15 assists and 87 points. She was named a second team All-American for her play on the Huskies' Division II national championship team in 1999. Engle also scored the game-winning goal in the 1998 NCAA Division II championship game.

Fetzko, a junior, was named to the team after a solid season of midfield play. Fetzko emerged last season as a solid defender with a good game sense who supports the ball well. These qualities earned Fetzko more playing time in 2000, as she looks to play a vital role on the team during her senior year. She played in 16 games last year for Bloomsburg.

Martin, a sophomore, emerged as a scoring threat and a solid midfielder this past season. In 19 games played, she tallied three goals, while assisting on four others, for a total of 10 points. Her 0.53 points per game ranked her seventh on the squad.

Parlton, a junior, proved to be a scoring threat from the back position. She scored four goals for a total of eight points in 19 games played last season. She will look to be a leader on the team during her senior year next season. Through three seasons, Parlton has six goals and four assists for a total of 16 points.

Roadarmel, a senior, was a leading scorer for the Huskies. She scored 11 goals and had four assists for a total of 26 points. Roadarmel ranked second on the team in goals and tied for second on the squad in points. Her 1.37 points per game also tied her for second on the team. Roadarmel was also part of the 1999 National Academic squad.

Roadarmel finished her career with 29 goals and 11 assists for a total of 69 points. She also was a part of three NCAA Division II national championship teams while at Bloomsburg.

Weikel, a senior, captures her second consecutive National Academic honor, while also helping the Huskies on the field with seven goals, five assists and 19 points in 19 games played last season. She ranked fifth on the team with a points per game average of 1.00. Weikel was named to the second team All-PSAC and was an alternate in the NFHCA/STX North-South All-Star Game.

Weikel helped the Huskies to three NCAA Division II National Championships in her four years at Bloomsburg. She finishes her career with 20 goals and 12 assists for a total of 52 points.

Head Coach Jan Hutchinson has now coached 22 Academic All-Americans in her 23 seasons at Bloomsburg.
