BLOOMSBURG—Indiana (PA) University (IUP) scored two first half goals on its way to a 2-0 win over Bloomsburg University in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Field Hockey playoffs. It is the first time since 1989 that the Huskies have not advanced to the championship game.
Michelle Benko scored the game's first goal at the 20:01 mark of the first half on an assist from Krista Herman. For Benko it was her team-high 14th goal.
It stayed that way until 3:38 left in the opening period when Herman recovered a loose ball on a scramble in front of the cage and beat Bloomsburg goalie Trish Leitzel. It was the 10th goal of the year for the Herman.
IUP goalie Jen Lawler stopped eight shots on the afternoon, while Leitzel turned away four. The Indians will now move on to face Lock Haven University, the top seed in the tournament, Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Charlotte Smith in Lock Haven.
Bloomsburg came into the game ranked second in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II poll, while the Indians were fourth. The Huskies will likely see their run of four straight NCAA Division II championships come to end with the loss. The NCAA Division II playoffs will be held Friday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 5 at a site to be determined.
The Indians advance to the PSAC Field Hockey championship for the first time in school history. The only other win for IUP in PSAC playoff history is a 1986 win, 1-0, over East Stroudsburg in a consolation game.
Bloomsburg has won 10 PSAC championships in the 21-year history of the event. Lock Haven is second in championships with nine.
