Bloomsburg Downs Lock Haven in Field Hockey ThrillerBLOOMSBURG—Steph Beck's (Orefield/Parkland) goal with no time left lifted the top-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies to a 1-0 win over Lock Haven University Wednesday afternoon. It was a match-up of the top two teams in Division II with Bloomsburg ranked number one and Lock Haven number two. The goal was set up by a penalty called inside the circle with eight seconds to play. Since the game cannot end till the ball is played off the corner and out of the circle. Shanna Fritz started the play for the Huskies and after the ball was knocked around inside the circle by several players, Steph Beck, who got behind Lock Haven goalie Melissa Stubblefield, was able to take a pass from Sheila Zilinski and punch in the gamewinner. The corner play was the last of four that Huskies had in the final 1:30 of action. The two teams battled on a even basis throughout the first half. Both teams had several corners plays, but each time the opposing team would kill the play with some great defense. Then, with 1:34 to play in the first half Lock Haven's Janelle Ebaugh got the ball on a breakaway in front of the Bloomsburg goal. Trish Leitzel, the Bloomsburg goalie, came out in the front of the goal and knocked down the shot by Ebaugh, then cleared the ball with her stick. Bloomsburg's best chance to score in the first half came with under a minute to play Nikki Hartranft hit a shot off a corner play that was knocked down and cleared by Melissa Stubblefield, the Lock Haven goalie. In the second half both teams again had several chances off of corner plays, but could not come up with anything. With 13 minutes to play Sheila Zilinski took a shot with Stubblefield making the save. Then with 11:40 to play Lock Haven's Kellie Kulina had a breakaway broken up by Sharla Partlon. The two teams then battled in the middle of the field before the final heroics of Beck and Zilinski for the Huskies. Bloomsburg, 16-0, 8-0 in the PSAC, will be the top seed in next week's PSAC playoffs. The Huskies winning streak was also stretched to 25 games dating back to last year. Lock Haven falls to 15-3, 6-2 in the PSAC. Bloomsburg will host Houghton College Saturday at 1 p.m. in the regular season finale.
