Bloomsburg Downs Shippensburg in Field Hockey

SHIPPENSBURG —Bloomsburg University won a matchup of two of Division II's top teams downing Shippensburg University, 4-3 on penalty strokes, on Thursday.

The teams were tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation sending the game into overtime. In the extra sessions there was no scoring sending the teams to penalty strokes to decide a winner.

The Huskies' Maribeth Brozena (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West) took the first shot and scored to put Bloomsburg in front. After two Shippensburg misses and a Bloomsburg miss, the Huskies' Marie Zorzi (Mountaintop/Crestwood) scored.

Shippensburg stayed alive when Natlie Grazan connected on her shot, but the final two Lady Raiders missed the mark giving Bloomsburg the win on strokes (one team point awarded to the winner of the stroke competition.)

The scoring opened when Ship's Lindsey Knupp scored 4:17 into the game for a 1-0 lead. Bloomsburg All-American Sharla Partlon (Langhorne/Neshaminy) tied the score at the 24:18 mark when scored unassisted.

In the second half, Ship's Grazan scored 13 minutes into play to give the home team a 2-1 lead before Partlon scored her second goal of the game to knot the score with 18 minutes to play. Knupp put Shippensburg back in front with 11:25 to play before Bloomsburg's Morgan Wolf (Oley/Oley Valley) tied the score for a third time with 10:23 to play.

In the closing minutes of regulation both teams had scoring chances, but came up empty.

Shippensburg outshot the Huskies, 15-12, but Bloomsburg held the edge in corners, 11-9.

The Huskies, now 5-0, travel to East Stroudsburg on Saturday. Shippensburg falls to 4-1 with the loss.
