Four Bloomsburg Players Earn All-American Field Hockey Honors


BLOOMSBURG- Four members of the Bloomsburg University field hockey team have been named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II All-American teams.

Junior midfielder Maribeth Brozena (Larksville/Wyoming Valley West), sophomore goalie Tracey Hudak (Sweet Valley/Lake Lehman) and senior midfielder Kristi Ney (Dauphin/Central Dauphin East) were awarded first team All-American honors while freshman forward Jamie Vanartsdalen (Philadelphia/Lower Moreland) was awarded second team honors. Each was also honored by WomensFieldHockey.com, being named first team All-American.

Brozena, a 2005 first-team All-PSAC selection, ended the year with six goals scored and a team-leading eight assists. She scored the Huskies only goal in the NCAA Championship game against UMass-Lowell and was a major contributor all season for Bloomsburg, earning PSAC Player of the Week Honors for the week of September 19.

Hudak, a 2004 first team All-American and 2004-05 All-PSAC selection, ended the season with 136 saves and a goals against average of 1.24. She also had three games with 10 or more saves and six shutout victories this season including a 1-0 shutout win over 2005 PSAC Champion Shippensburg in the NCAA Semifinals.

Ney, also a 2004 All-American and 2004-05 All-PSAC selection, ended the season with nine goals scored and also tied for the team lead with eight assists. She was a consistent offensive threat for the Huskies, notching two goals in a game twice this season. Nye finishes her career at Bloomsburg with 87 career points, tying her for 10th place all-time for the Huskies.

Vanartsdalen, a 2005 first team PSAC selection, had a standout freshman campaign. She led the team in goals scored with 19 and recorded seven assists. Her 2005 season totals for goals and points are both in the top ten in school history. Vanartsdalen scored the game winning goal in the NCAA Semifinal game against Shippensburg and also had a hat-trick in a 5-3 loss to Shippensburg in the PSAC Championship game. She was also named WomensFieldHockey.com's Division II Rookie of the Year.

In addition, freshmen Venessa Witman (Oley/Oley Valley) and Samantha Kropa (Tunkhannock /Lackawanna Trail), along with Vanartsdalen, were named to the WomensFieldHockey.com All-Rookie Squad.

The Huskies finished the 2005 season with a 19-5 record.
