Vanartsdalen NamedPSAC Field Hockey Athlete of the Year


BLOOMSBURG-- Bloomsburg University field hockey standout Jamie Vanartsdalen (Huntingdon Valley/Lower Moreland) has been named the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Field Hockey Athlete of the Year in voting by the league's coaches. In addition, freshman Brieann Wolfe (Perkasie/Pennridge) was named the PSAC Rookie of the Year.

Those players highlight the total of seven Huskies that have been named to the 2007 PSAC All-Conference Team. Joining Vanartsdalen on the first team are Ashley Heckard (Millerstown/Greenwood), Chelsea Due (Pen Argyl/Pen Argyl) and Whitney Miller (Lancaster/Penn Manor), while joining Wolfe on the second team are Samantha Kropa (Tunkhannock/Lackawanna Trail),and Kelsy Kress (Littlestown/Littlestown).

Vanartsdalen, a junior forward, led the Huskies offensively with a record-breaking scoring season. Her 81 points (32 goals, 17 assists) scored on the year is both an NCAA Division II and school record for a season. She also became Bloomsburg's career point's leader with 188 points scored, passing the previous mark of 174. Vanartsdalen leads the NCAA in all divisions in points and Division II in points per game (3.68), goals per game (1.45) and assists per game (0.77). She also owns PSAC single-season record in points and goal, while tying for first in assists. This is the third consecutive year Vanartsdalen has been named to the first-team.

Heckard joined Vanartsdalen in creating the nation's top scoring duo. Heckard, a senior forward who has been selected to the All-PSAC team for the first time in her career, scored 24 goals and recorded five assists for 53 points on the year.

Wolfe played in 22 games this season at forward for Huskies and contributed to an already potent offense that ranked best in the country (5.36 goals per game). She finished third on the team in goals scored with 16 and added two game winning goals throughout the course of the season.

Due, a sophomore, picked up where she left off last season after being named the 2006 PSAC Rookie of the Year. She scored six goals and recorded five assists on the year playing mid-field for the Huskies and was selected for the second straight season to the first-team for her efforts.

Miller, a junior, makes her first appearance on the PSAC team in her career. Playing midfield for the Huskies, Miller scored three goals and recorded six assists in 22 games

Kropa, a junior forward, finished fourth on the team in goals scored with 13and recorded six assists. This is the third consecutive year she has made the all-PSAC team.

Kress, a junior, makes her second consecutive appearance on the All-PSAC team. Kress, a midfielder, paced a Bloomsburg defense that recorded nine shutouts and allowed 1.32 goals scored per game, third best in the conference.

Bloomsburg will be the number two seed from the South Region of the 2007 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships and will face number three seed Kutztown in the quarterfinals. The game will take place at Bloomsburg University's Sports Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The top seed in the region is Indiana (Pa.).
