Bloomsburg Wins 10th PSAC Field Hockey Championship

BLOOMSBURG—Senior Amy Yoder (Nescopeck/Central Columbia HS) scored twice to lead Bloomsburg University to a 2-0 win over Lock Haven in the 1999 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Field Hockey Championship game. It was the 10th PSAC title for the Huskies and the sixth of this decade.

The two longtime rivals battled for the first four minutes of the game before senior Jess Kircher (Fleetwood/Oley Valley HS) took a shot from just outside the circle. The ball was then deflected by Yoder into the goal giving the Huskies a 1-0 at the 30:43 mark.

Lock Haven was awarded consecutive corners with 20:41 left in the first half, but each time the Huskies defense cleared the ball from the circle.

After the two teams moved up and down the field, the Huskies were able to make it 2-0 when Yoder scored again off a scramble in front of the goal.

In the second half, the Huskies dominated play, maintaining control of the ball for a majority of the time. Lock Haven's best scoring opportunity came with 13:21 left to play. With the ball at the top of the circle, Lock Haven got off a shot off that hit the post, then bounced away.

The Huskies did have two other scoring opportunities with eight and half minutes left, but Lock Haven goalie Tara Beech made two kick saves and kept the game at 2-0.

Yoder, who now has nine goals for the year, was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

Coach Jan Hutchinson knew the Bald Eagles would be tough.

"Lock Haven did a good job adapting its game to the grass field," said Hutchinson. "We just happened to get two free hits in front of the goal and were able to convert. Overall, it was an evenly played game."

With Bloomsburg holding a 2-0 at halftime, Hutchinson knew the Bald Eagles would not back off.

"Lock Haven did not quit. They came after us harder. In the second half, we were able get more of the attack and maintain the upper hand.

"I think we used our bench more which had an impact in the game," Hutchinson said. "We have eight strong attackers and we were shuttling them in and out today."

After losing six starters last season, Hutchinson did not expect to be competing for the conference title.

"I did not expect to be in this situation this year," Hutchinson commented. "A lot of our second string varsity players stepped up this year and Trish Leitzel (Richfield/Middleburg HS) has done a great job in goal under pressure today."

The two teams that will play for the NCAA championship will be selected Sunday evening and the Huskies hope to be playing at home. "I believe we have played a stronger schedule, but we will just be glad to selected and will go anywhere to play." The NCAA Division II championship game will be played Sunday, Nov. 7th.
