Bloomsburg Nips Gannon on Own Goal

ERIE—Bloomsburg University never owned a lead in regulation, but the fifth-ranked Huskies rallied in the second half and posted an amazing 12-11 overtime victory against Gannon in women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Gannon University Field.

In the end, it was Gannon that provided Bloomsburg with the winning goal. Sheila Zelinski was awarded q free position shot with 15 seconds left. After a battle in front of the net following Zelinski's missed shot, a Gannon player knocked the ball into the Gannon goal with 10 seconds left in the second overtime. Gannon's own goal provided Bloomsburg with a come-from-behind 12-11 victory.   Gannon and Bloomsburg traded the contest's first eight goals before the Lady Knights took control. Gannon shutout Bloomsburg for the final 10:35 of the first half, scoring three goals in that time span, and went to halftime with a 7-4 lead.   After Bloomsburg opened the second half with a goal, Gannon gained its biggest lead of the afternoon at 9-5 with the next two goals. As Gannon did towards the end of the first half, Bloomsburg shut down the Gannon offense and tied the match at nine with 11:26 left in regulation. Zelinski's first goal of the match tied the contest.   After nine minutes of scoreless play, Gannon finally tallied another goal with 45 seconds left. Mindy Richmond scored on an isolation play and put Gannon back in front by a 10-9 score. It was Gannon's first goal in 24 minutes.

Bloomsburg wasn't about to quit. Zelinski responded with her second goal with 24 seconds left in regulation and the two teams went to overtime. The two squads failed to score in the first overtime. Bloomsburg opened the scoring in the second overtime on Colleen Dunn's goal with 2:30 left. The Huskies grabbed their first lead of the afternoon at 11-10 on Dunn's goal. Richmond responded again for Gannon with an unassisted goal with 1:55 left, tying the contest at 11.

Bloomsburg regained control after back-to-back turnovers and worked the clock under 20 seconds. Zelinski was awarded a free position shot with 15 seconds left and couldn't find the goal with her shot. A battle for the loose ball ensued in front of the net when a Gannon player tried to toss the ball back to the Gannon goalkeeper, but the ball sailed into the net for a Bloomsburg score with 10 seconds left.

Georgia Carinci led the Bloomsburg attack with four goals and three assists. Colleen Dunn added three goals.

Gannon's Jessica Watson made 20 saves between the pipes and kept the home team in the game with numerous great saves. The Huskies' Linda Schultz needed only two saves in the win for Bloomsburg.
