Bloomsburg Loses PSAC Lacrosse Title Game

WEST CHESTER —The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team lost to West Chester, 23-18, in the title game of the 2004 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships.

With the loss the Huskies, the 2003 champions, end their season with a record of 9-9.

West Chester opened the game with back-to-back goals from Kathleen Sheenan before the Huskies answered back with three straight of their own. Georgia Carinci (Springmount/Perkioman Valley) scored at the 21:21 mark before Sheila Zilinski (Barton/Boyertown) scored 20 seconds apart with 14:45 to play. West Chester regained the lead with two goals over the next five minutes. The Huskies then took a 5-4 lead with goals from Danielle Yeager (Delran, NJ/Delran) and Allison McFatridge (Hatboro/Upper Moreland). The Golden Rams though tied the score 5-5 with a goal with 2:16 left before halftime.

In the second half, the scoring pace picked up for both teams. The teams exchanged leads over the first 17 minutes of the half with neither team getting more than one goal lead. Then, with the score tied 13-13, Carinci and Yeager scored back-to-back goals to give Bloomsburg a 15-13 edge with 9:44 to play. It was the largest lead of the game for the Huskies, but would be short-lived.

West Chester came back with six straight goals to take a 19-15 lead with 4:58 to play in the game. Kirstin McGoldrick keyed the rally for the home team with three of the six goals. Bloomsburg finally broke the scoring string when Sheila Zilinski scored with 4:21 to play cutting the deficit to 19-16. However, Katelyn Martin scored consecutive goals for West Chester to make it 21-16 lead with 2:39 to play putting the game out of reach.

Carinci, who had five goals and two assists in the game, ends her season with 85 goals and 26 assists for 107 points. She is the first player in Bloomsburg history to finish a season with 100 or more points. She went into the game leading all of Division II in scoring with more than 4.7 per game.

West Chester improves to 17-2 in winning its 16 PSAC lacrosse title.
