BU Drops Close Game with Mercyhurst

ERIE-- The Bloomsburg University lacrosse team lost to Mercyhurst on Saturday by a score of 9-8 snapping the team's four-game winning streak.

After Kelsey Quigley (Lansdale/Methacton) got the Huskies on the board first with a goal 3:52 into the game, the Lakers scored the next three goals to grab a 3-1 lead. Bloomsburg rallied and got three consecutive scores from Cali Toms (Pottstown/Pottsgrove), Kylie Matthews (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) and Angie Picciotti (Chalfont/Central Bucks West) to back in front 4-3 with 11:44 left in the half.

Merychurst answered again with three straight goals to take a 6-4 lead with Bloomsburg getting one back before halftime to trail 6-5 at intermission.

In the second half the Huskies opened the period with goals from Picciotti and Sam Alexander (Willow Grove/Upper Moreland) to go back on top 7-6 with 26 minutes to play in the game. Merychurst knotted the game at 7-7 with a goal with just under 16 minutes to play before the Huskies went back out in front, 8-7, on a goal from Matthews. However, that would be the Huskies last lead of the game. The Lakers scored twice in the final eight minutes of play with the game winning goal coming with just 2:04 to play in the contest.

Picciotti and Matthews both had two goals with Picciotti also adding an assist. Bloomsburg goalie Bridget Maenner (Philadelphia/Little Flower) made 16 saves in the loss.

Bloomsburg, 8-6, will host West Chester on Monday at 4 p.m. Mercyhurst improves to 11-2 on the year.
