Bloomsburg Men Fall to Kutztown in OvertimeKUTZTOWN —Jeff Brickus' steal and layup with 19 seconds to play lifted Kutztown University to an 88-87 overtime win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. With time running down in regulation, the Huskies' (6-18, 2-9 PSAC) Tom Barlow (Dresher/Upper Dublin) sent the game into overtime by hitting a three-pointer. In overtime, the Huskies held a brief, 82-81 lead with 3:04 to play when Matt Jefferson (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science) hit a jumper. Kutztown (17-8, 7-3 PSAC East), though, came back and took an 86-82 lead on a layup by Bilal Salaam and three-point play by Brickus. Later, with the score tied 86-86, the Huskies Adam Bohman (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Twp) had the ball stolen by Brickus who took it in for a score and the lead. The Huskies did have a chance to send the game into double overtime, but Ryan Luckman (York/York Catholic), who was fouled by Salaam with three seconds to go, missed the second of two free throws to give the Golden Bears the win. In the first half, the Huskies held an early 10-2 lead just three and half minutes into the game. The Golden Bears then came back and used a 9-0 run to go up 11-10. Later, with Kutztown leading 31-29, the Golden Bears went on a 14-5 run to close out the half and lead by 11 at the break. Bloomsburg started the second half with a 19-8 run to tie the game at 53-53 with 14:38 to play. Jefferson tallied eight points in the run lead the Huskies' rally. Then, with Kutztown leading, 69-62, the Huskies rallied once more and pulled to within one, 73-72 with 1:44 left to play setting up the late game heroics for Barlow. Barlow tied his career high with 28 points, while Bohman added 22 points and 13 rebounds with Jefferson getting a career-high 20 points. Brickus led Kutztown with 27 points, while Salaam added 13 points. Bloomsburg will face Pitt-Johnstown on Monday night at 7 p.m. in a makeup of a game that was snowed out last week. |
