Bloomsburg Downs Pitt-Johnstown in Men's BasketballBLOOMSBURG—Senior Tom Barlow (Dresher/Upper Dublin) scored a team-high 22 points to lead five players in double figures as Bloomsburg University beat Pitt-Johnstown, 84-77, in men's college basketball action Saturday night. The two teams traded leads in the early going with the Mountain Cats, 8-11, grabbing a 9-8 lead on a layup by Paul Byer. The lead would the last for the visitors as Barlow's three-pointer at the 16:57 mark gave the Huskies the lead for good at 13-9. Bloomsburg, 5-13, would increase its lead to 10 points, 29-19, with 9:26 to play on a three-point play from Barlow. A little later, Jaren Burdine (Reading/Reading) and Ryan Luckman (York/York Catholic) would hit back-to-back baskets in a 30 second span to make it a 12 point lead for the Huskies, 35-23 with 7:02 to play in the first half. The Mountain Cats, though, came storming back and trimmed the deficit to just two points, 42-40, with 1:52 left in the half on a layup by Steve Scorpion. However, the Huskies were able to enjoy a seven-point halftime lead, 47-40, when Luckman drained a three-pointer at the buzzer. Bloomsburg led 59-52 with 14:15 to play in the game when UPJ went on a 7-0 to tie the game at 59-59 all, Scott Mezyk's three-pointer and layup on consecutive possessions knotted the game for the Mountain Cats. The Huskies though, got a three-pointer from Barlow and a layup from Matt Jefferson (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science) to go back up by five, 64-59, with 11:26 to play. The lead would continue to increase to as many as 12 points, 78-66, on a three-pointer by Bob Nensteil (Nuremberg/Weatherly) with 2:44 to play. However, UPJ had one more rally to make and got the score down to three points, 80-77, with 12 seconds left, but could no closer. Luckman hit four free throws in the final 12 seconds to give the Huskies a seven point win. Along with Barlow's 22 points, Burdine and Luckman added 13 points each with Luckman just missing a triple-double as he added 12 rebounds and nine assists. Jefferson finished with 12 points and Adam Bohman (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Twp.) 11 points and 10 rebounds. Eugene Wilson led the Mountain Cats with 23 points, while Carlos Godsell added 12 and Scott Meyzk 11. The Huskies return to PSAC East action Wednesday hosting Cheyney at 8 p.m. |
