Bloomsburg Falls to Pitt-Johnstown in Men's Basketball

JOHNSTOWN —Bloomsburg senior Tom Barlow (Dresher/Upper Dublin) scored a career-high 29 points but it wasn't enough as the Huskies lost to Pitt-Johnstown, 95-92 in overtime, Monday night in collegiate basketball action.

In regulation the Huskies (6-19) trailed by seven, 80-73, with 2:12 left. However, the Huskies got back-to-back layups from Barlow and Adam Bohman (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Twp) to make it an 80-77 game with 1:35 to play. After a pair of free throws from Pitt-Johnstown's (11-16) JJ Schumacher made it a five-point game at 82-77, Barlow scored again followed by a layup from Ryan Luckman (York/York Catholic) after a UPJ turnover to make it an 82-81 game with 20 seconds remaining. The Mountain Cats Paul Byer hit two free throws with 19 seconds left to make it a three-point game at 84-81. Luckman was then fouled going to the basket and hit both free throws to get the Huskies back within one at 84-83. Bloomsburg then fouled Scott Mezyk who hit one of two free throws giving the Huskies a chance. With time running down, Barlow shot and missed with Matt Jefferson (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science) there to tip the ball in and send the game into overtime.

In the extra session the Huskies held the early lead, 88-85 with 4:19 to play, on one of two free throws from Bohman and a jumper by Barlow. Consecutive baskets by UPJ gave the Mountain Cats an 89-88 lead, which it pushed to four at 92-88 on a three-point play by Dwight Hines.

Bloomsburg tied the score at 92-92 with 54 seconds to play on layups by Jefferson and Barlow. UPJ, though, hit three of four free throws in the final minute to give the home team a 95-92 lead. Bloomsburg's Todd Schweitzer (McKees Rocks/Montour) did have a chance to tie the game, but his three-pointer was off the mark giving the Mountain Cats the win.

In the first half, the Mountain Cats led by as many as eight points before the Huskies rallied and cut the deficit to three-points at the break when Bohman scored with 39 seconds left.

Along with Barlow's 29 points, Bohman added 23 points and 17 rebounds with Jefferson getting 12 points.

Byer led Pitt-Johnstown with 32 points, while Steve Scorpion added 20 points.

The Huskies conclude their 2002-03 season Wednesday at Cheyney at 8 p.m.
