Bloomsburg Loses to West Chester in Men's BasketballBLOOMSBURG—John Phillips scored a team-high 22 points to lead West Chester University to a 78-71 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball Saturday night. The Huskies were bolstered in the game by the return of leading scorer Tom Barlow (Dresher/Upper Dublin) who missed four games with a knee injury. In the early going the teams traded leads before the Huskies went up by three, 11-8, on a three-pointer by Bob Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly). However, a 7-0 run by the Golden Rams gave them the lead for good at 15-11 with 13:22 to play. West Chester increased its first half lead to eight, 25-17, on a layup by Robert Williams before the Huskies came back to within two right before the break, 35-33, on five straight points from Barlow. A jumper by Phillips, though, sent the Golden Rams to the locker room with a 37-33 lead. In the second half, West Chester was leading 50-44 when it went on a 9-0 run to open up a 59-44 advantage with 11:33 to play. The Huskies though came back. Two jumpers each from Ryan Luckman (York/York Catholic) and Jaren Burdine (Reading/Reading) trimmed the margin to 11, 59-48. Then late, a layup and a free throw from Burdine made it a six point game at 64-58 with 5:41 to play. Playing with momentum, the Huskies got the margin back to within one, 66-65, when Luckman drove the lane for a layup with 3:18 to play. The shot capped a 7-0 run for the Huskies. However, Suni Blackwell drained a three-pointer from the corner to make it and Ramzee Stanton hit a layup to make it 71-65 with 2:12 to play. The Huskies did back to within three with 21 seconds to play, 72-69, on another Luckman layup, but the Golden Rams went 6-6 from the foul line in the final seconds to make the final, 78-71. Along with Phillips getting 22 for West Chester, 12-3, 2-0 PSAC East, Stanton finished with 18, Kofi Danquah had 13 and Blackwell 11. The Huskies, now 3-11, 0-2 PSAC East, got 23 points from Barlow and 21 from Luckman. Burdine finished with 10 points and the only other player in double figures for the Huskies. Bloomsburg will visit Mansfield Wednesday night at 8 p.m. |
