Bloomsburg Falls to California (PA) in Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Tom Frederick scored a game-high 25 points to lead the California (PA) Vulcans to an 84-71 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies jumped out to the early lead, 12-8, in the first seven minutes of the game. Adam Bohman (Sussex, NJ/Vernon Twp.) had four points, plus three-pointers by Ryan Luckman (York/York Catholic) and Todd Schweitzer (McKees Rocks/Montour) helped the Huskies grab the early advantage.

However, Bohman would soon exit to the bench after picking up his second foul and would sit for the remainder of the half. Without Bohman and leading scorer Tom Barlow (Dresher/Upper Dublin), not playing due to any injury, the Vulcans were able to rally and pulled ahead by nine points at halftime, 35-26.

Cal increased its lead to 16 at 44-28 just three minutes into the final 20 minutes on the strength of five points from Ishmieal Kamera. The Huskies fought back though and trimmed the deficit to nine, 50-41, on back-to-back jumpers by Ryan Hewitt. But once again, Cal used its deep bench to hold the Huskies in check and pushed the lead up to 19, its biggest margin of the game, 68-49, with 4:32 to play after a free throw by Gerrman Ballard.

However, the Huskies got seven consecutive points from Todd Schweitzer and a three-pointer from Ryan Luckman over the next two minutes to get the deficit back down to nine, 71-62, with 1:51 to play. That would be as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the way as the Vulcans hit seven of eight free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Along with 25 points from Frederick, Cal, now 12-5, got 13 from Kamera and 10 from Michael Johnson. Bloomsburg, now 3-9, was led by Luckman with 18 points, while Schweitzer got 13 and 12 from Justin Scott (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science).

The Huskies visit Millersville Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in the start of PSAC Eastern Division play.
