Bloomsburg Downs Columbia Union in Consolation Game

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV —Tom Barlow scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to an 83-69 win over Columbia Union in the consolation game of the Clarion Hotel Tip-Off Tournament at Shepherd College in West Virginia. The win was the first for new Bloomsburg coach Rich Mills.

After the two teams battled on even terms in the opening minutes, the Huskies finally pulled away with the help of 10-4 run started by a three-pointer from Jason Benson. The run gave the Huskies a 39-27 lead, its biggest lead of the first half, with about three minutes to play in the opening period.

In the second half, the Huskies slowly built their lead behind the strong shooting of Barlow and Benson, a transfer from Penn State-New Kensington. The Pioneers of Columbia Union were able to trim the deficit to six on several occasions, but each time the Huskies responded with baskets, which pushed the lead into double digits.

Barlow's 24 points led four players in double figures for Bloomsburg. The senior also hit on four of seven from three-point range to lead the team. Benson added 16 points, Adam Bohman 13 and Ryan Luckman 10 for the Huskies.

Columbia Union, 0-2, was led in scoring by Raymond Starchens with 26 points and Darryl Bethea with 21.

Bloomsburg, 1-1, will play its home opener on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Lycoming College at the Nelson Field House. All fans bringing a canned good or other non-perishable food item will be admitted free of charge to the game.
