Bloomsburg Falls to Cheyney In Men's Basketball

CHEYNEY — Ryan Sidney came off the bench to score 15 points and lead Cheyney University to a 72-61 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Wednesday night.

The two teams traded leads in the early going before freshmen Ryan Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) hit a three-pointer and John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends) scored a layup for a 10-6 Bloomsburg advantage with 14:20 to go in the first half. Cheyney rallied and grabbed an 18-12 lead when Donnelle Holly hit a pair of free throws.

With the Wolves leading 26-22 at halftime, the Huskies scored the first 10 points of the half to lead, 32-26. Owens started the rally with a jumper, then Seth Scott (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) tied the score with a layup following a steal by Justin Scott (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science). Ryan Hewitt (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) hit back-to-back shots for a four point lead before Seth Scott scored off a miss for the six-point lead.

Bloomsburg extended the lead to 10 points, 40-30, on a three-point play from Owens with 13:52 to play. The Wolves rallied and went ahead by one with an 11-0 rally with Sidney scoring six of the 11 points. Following a jumper by Benson which gave the Huskies a 42-41 lead, the Wolves went on 13-5 run to take a 56-47 lead with 4:34 to play.

Later, leading by seven, the Wolves got a three-pointer from Ellis Gindraw and a layup from Holly for a 12-point lead, 63-51, with 2:21 to play. Back-to-back baskets from Seth Scott and a three-pointer from Owens got Bloomsburg back to within eight with 21 seconds left, by the Wolves hit four of four from the foul line in the final 20 seconds to win by 11.

Owens led the Huskies, 6-13, 1-5 PSAC East, with 16 points, while Benson scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds. Seth Scott added 12 points and six rebounds.

Along with Sidney's 15 points for Cheyney, 15-5, 5-1 in the PSAC East, Anthony Frazier added 10 points and eight rebounds. Overall, each of the 12 players on the Cheyney roster scored at least two points.
