Huskies Fall to Clarion in Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Terrance Vaughns scored a game-high 18 points to lead Clarion University past Bloomsburg University, 59-55, in men's college basketball action Sunday afternoon.

The Huskies came out red hot to start the game led 16-2 after the first seven minutes of the game. Todd Schweitzer (McKees Rocks/Montour) was the go-to guy for the Huskies in the run hitting three, three-pointers and two free throws for 11 of the Huskies 16 points.

Clarion, though, battled back and took a 22-19 lead with the help of 20-3 run of its own with Vaughns scoring 11 of the 20 points for the Golden Eagles, including three, three-pointers of his own.

Tied at 28-all at halftime, the Golden Eagles came out and grabbed a 41-36 lead on a jumper by Lee Church with 13:48 to go in the game. The Huskies then put the clamps on defensively and held Clarion scoreless of the next seven minutes of play. In the meantime, a couple of free throws from Jason Benson (Pittsburgh/Schenely) made it 41-38 in favor of Clarion. Then Brian Holsey (Philadelphia/JR Masterman) put back a missed jumper to tie the game before John Owens hit a jumper and Ryan Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) a three to give Bloomsburg a 45-41 lead with 7:19 to play. Clarion finally broke its scoreless streak when Ryan Wells scored a layuup with 6:58 to play. Later a Vaughns put-back tied the score before a Michael Clarke layup gave Clarion the lead for good at 47-45.

After the Golden Eagles pushed the lead to six points, 51-45, the closest the Huskies could get the rest of the way was four points.

Along with Vaughns getting 18, Bobby Franklin scored 14 and Clarke 12 for the Golden Eagles, now 10-2. Bloomsburg, 5-9, was led by Schweitzer with 14 points, while Owens added 11 with Benson netting 11.

The Huskies will host Millersville on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
