Bloomsburg Loses to East Stroudsburg in Men's Basketball

EAST STROUDSBURG —Shahad Abdur-Rahkman scored a game-high 18 points to lead East Stroudsburg to a 72-63 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Bloomsburg started strong in the game jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the opening three minutes of play. Ryan Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) and Billy Bryan (Denver/Reading Holy Name), both freshmen, scored five and four points respectively in the opening minutes of action. The Huskies later stretched the lead to nine, 17-11, on a three-pointer by Todd Schweitzer (McKees Rocks/Montour) at the 11:11 mark of the first half.

The Warriors, though, came back with an 14-4 rally to go up by one points, 22-21, on a layup by Aamir Taylor. The Huskies briefly regained the lead, 24-22 on a pair of free throws by Bryan, before the Warriors went into the locker room with a 31-28 lead. The Huskies were held without a field goal over the final 6:15 of the first half; connecting on seven of eight from the foul line in the stretch.

In the second half of play East Stroudsburg pushed its lead to as many as 12 points in the first 10 minutes of the half and were leading 49-39 when the Huskies mounted a comeback.

Owens started the rally for Bloomsburg with a layup, who then got four straight points from Nenstiel to close the gap to 49-45 with 8:50 to play. After the Warriors went back up by eight, two free throws from Seth Scott and a jumper from Ryan Hewitt (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) got the Huskies back to within 55-51 with 6:41 to go. East Stroudsburg then put the game away with a 16-0 run to grab a 17-point lead at 71-54 with 3:03 to go. Abdur-Rahkman led the Warriors with six points in the run.

Two free throws from John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends) broke the scoreless streak for the Huskies with 2:32 to play and Bloomsburg could get no closer than the final deficit of nine points.

Owens scored a team-high 17 points for the Huskies, now 6-17, 1-8 PSAC East, while Nenstiel added 12 points.

Along with 18 from Abdur-Rahkman for East Stroudsburg, the Warriors, 13-10, 4-4 PSAC East, also got 16 points from Rich Baker and 10 from Dave Majeski.

The Huskies visit Mansfield on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
