Huskies Lose to Kutztown In Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—T.J. Mann scored a game-high 18 points to lead Kutztown University to a 69-62 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Saturday evening.
The Golden Bears jumped out to an early 17-7 lead in the game only to see the Huskies come back and close to within three points at 17-14 on a layup by Todd Schweitzer (Coroplis/Montour) with 11:01 to play in the half. Kutztown, though, responded with 10 unanswered points to go up by a margin of 27-14. Ryan Hewitt (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) stopped the scoring run with a pair of free throws for Bloomsburg at the 7:05 mark. The Huskies then closed to within six points on a pair of Schweitzer free throws with 29 seconds left before the Golden Bears' Tyree Brickus hit a layup at the buzzer to give the visitors an eight point halftime lead.
In the second half, the Huskies got back to within five points when Ryan Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) drained a three-pointer on the first possession of the period. But later, the Golden Bears were able to push lead back to double digits, 54-43, on a three-pointer from Tyree Brickus with 14:12 to go in the game. After a 4 ˝ minute scoring drought for both teams, the Golden Bears got layups from Jeff Brickus and Bilal Salaam and three-pointer from Vince Pease for a 16-point edge, 61-45, with eight minutes to play.
Bloomsburg then battled back to within seven points, 67-60, on two more free throws from Hewitt with 35 seconds left. However, that would be as close as the Huskies would get as Jeff Brickus sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 31 seconds to play.
Along with 18 points for Mann, Tyree Brickus added 16 points and Salaam 12 for the Golden Bears, 15-9, 6-4 in the PSAC East.
The Huskies, 6-19, 1-10 in the PSAC East, got 12 points each from Schweitzer and John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends), while Matt Fisher (Cogan Station/Jersey Shore) scored a career-high 10 points.
Bloomsburg will close out its 2003-04 home season on Wednesday when it hosts Cheyney at the Nelson Field House.
