Huskies Fall to West Chester in Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Kofi Danquah scored a team-high 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead West Chester to an 81-74 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Saturday night.

The Huskies held the early edge in the game going out to a 6-1 lead on the strength of two buckets from Seth Scott (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) and one from John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends). The Golden Rams rallied and took an 11-10 lead on a dunk by Danquah with 11:59 to go in the first half. From there, except for a brief 11-11 tie, West Chester built its lead to as many as 19 points, 37-18 with 16 seconds to play in the half. The Huskies, though, got a three-pointer from Jason Benson (Pittsburgh/Schenley) and a steal and jumper from Owens to trail by 14 at the break, 37-23.

West Chester started the second with a 6-0 run to stretch the lead to 20 at 43-23 with 17:40 to play in the game. The lead for West Chester remained between 15 and 20 points for much of the next 12 minutes. That's when back to back three-pointers from Ryan Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) and Billy Bryan (Denver/Reading Holy Name) and two free throws from Matt Fisher (Cogan Station/Jersey Shore) got Bloomsburg to within seven points, 65-58, with 4:15 to play.

West Chester pushed the lead back to 10 at 68-58 with 3:28 to go in the game before another three-pointer from Nenstiel got the Huskies back to within seven. After a made free throw from Danquah, Bloomsburg's John Owens scored on a short jumper to get the Huskies within six at 71-65 with 2:05 to go.

With less than a minute to play, Bloomsburg trailed by just five, 75-70, on a jumper by Brian Holsey (Philadelphia/J.R. Masterman). However, the Golden Rams hit six of six from the free throw line in the final 45 seconds to seal the win.

Along with Danquah's 18 points and 11 rebounds, Matt Kurtz added 13 points and Brandon Long scored 11 off the bench. Antoine Love and Steve Fattori each added 10 for West Chester now 12-9, 3-4 in the PSAC East.

Bloomsburg was led by a career-high 19 points from Owens, while Seth Scott, Nenstiel and Brian Holsey each added 10 points.

The Huskies, 6-15, 1-6 in the PSAC East, will visit Millersville on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
