Huskies Down East Stroudsburg in Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Jason Benson (Pittsburgh/Schenley) scored a game-high 26 points to lead Bloomsburg University to an 83-70 win over East Stroudsburg in men's basketball action Saturday night. The win was the first PSAC Eastern Division victory for first-year Bloomsburg coach Terry Conrad.

The Huskies, who never trailed in the game, led by 41-27 at halftime as freshman Ryan Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to send the Huskies to the locker room leading by 14. The Huskies increased that lead to 19-point, 51-32 with 16:57 to play in the game, only to see the Warriors go on a 14-4 run to close within nine, 55-46. Rich Baker keyed the rally for the Warriors with three, three-pointers in the run.

The Huskies, though, pushed the lead back to 13 on layups by Benson and John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends). The Warriors, though, shooting 50 percent from three-point range in the second half (8-16), closed to within three on a three from Sky Williams and a layup from Anthony Ross to make it 67-64 with 6:47 to play.

A 7-0 run though by the Huskies pushed the lead back to 10 points, 74-64, with 4:09 to play. The Warriors got back to within six points, 76-70, however, the Huskies converted five of eight free throws in the final two minutes to win by 13 points.

In the opening half, Bloomsburg came out strong and took an early nine point lead, 13-4, behind five points from Benson and four from Owens.

The Warriors closed the gap to six points, 28-22, with 4:33 to play, but an 8-0 run quickly lifted the Huskies back to a double digit lead at 36-22.

Along with Benson's 27 points, Bloomsburg, now 6-12, 1-3 in the PSAC East, had Seth Scott (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) finish with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Owens added 13.

East Stroudsburg, 11-7, 2-1 in the PSAC East, had four players in double figures led by Rich Baker with 19 and Sky Williams with 16.

Bloomsburg will visit Kutztown on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
