Huskies Fall to Edinboro in Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Jakim Donaldson scored a game-high 20 points to lead Edinboro University to a 74-69 win over Bloomsburg University in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
After Bloomsburg took a 6-0 lead to open the game, the Huskies saw the Fightin' Scots came back and grab a 12-9 lead on a layup from Arvin Kotrri with 12:30 left in the first half. Edinboro extended its margin to six points, 17-11, when Rob Sims drained a three-pointer before the Huskies battled back and took a lead.
Bloomsburg regained the lead when freshman John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends) scored on a jumper to make it 23-22 with 6:50 to play in the half. The basket capped an 11-6 run for Bloomsburg with both Owens and Ryan Hewitt (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) scoring four points each in the rally.
The Fightin' Scots, though, regained the lead on Donaldson's jumper with 6:36 remaining and held the lead right up to halftime when it went to the locker room with a 36-31, advantage.
Early in the second half, with Edinboro leading by four, 40-36, Tom Grabill and Kottrri hit jumpers with Grabill adding a free throw to give the visitors their biggest lead of the game, 45-36. Then later, with the Huskies trailing 52-45, Bloomsburg went on an11-2 run over a five minute stretch to tie the game at 56-56 with 5:20 to play. Jason Benson (Pittsburgh/Schenley) began the run with a couple of free throws, then Justin Scott (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science) hit a jumper and Hewitt hit three free throws. A Todd Schweitzer (McKees Rocks/Montour) three-pointer made it a 56-55 game before Seth Scott (Waynesboro/Waynesboro) tied things up with a free throw.
Donaldson, though, hit a couple of free throws to make it 60-58, before Seth Scott tied the score again with a layup off a steal from Owens. Doanldson, though, once again hit two more free throws and added a jumper sandwiched around a bucket from Robert Taylor for a 64-56 lead with 1:24 to play.
In the final 1:24 Edinboro was 8-8 from the foul line, while the closest Bloomsburg could get was three-points, 72-69, on a three-pointer from Benson with 14 seconds left to play.
Along with Donaldson's 20 points and eight rebounds for Edinboro, now 5-9, Robert Sims added 19 points, while Tom Grabill chipped in with 11 off the bench.
Bloomsburg was led in scoring by Owens with 15 points, while Hewitt scored a career-high 13 points with Benson adding 11.
The Huskies, now 5-8, will host Clarion on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
