Bloomsburg Beats Lock Haven in Men's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG—Freshman Mike Cheatle (Lower Gwynedd/Hatboro-Horsham) came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points to lead Bloomsburg University to a 62-54 win Sunday afternoon in men's college basketball action.

Lock Haven jumped out to a five-point lead, 14-9, in the first eight minutes of the game after Eddie Christiano hit a three-pointer. Bloomsburg, though, came back and took a two-point lead when Buddy Rose (Philadelphia/Mastbaum) hit a layup for a 17-15 lead with 6:45 left in the half.

Later, with the score tied 20-20, the Huskies got a three-pointer from Cheatle and a layup from Bob Nenstiel (Nuremburg/Weatherly) for a 25-20 lead. The Bald Eagles, trimmed the lead back to three at the break, 27-24, on a layup from Quentin Terry.

In the first six minutes of the second half the teams were tied on three occasions before the Huskies used a 7-0 run to take a 42-35 lead with 11:27 left in the game. Rose, John Owens (Philadelphia/Abington Friends) and Billy Bryan (Denver, PA/Holy Name) all had baskets in the rally with Bryan adding a free throw after his bucket.

Bloomsburg later pushed the lead to 14 points, 56-42, with 2:45 left in the game on a layup by Cheatle. Lock Haven did battle back get within six points, though just seven seconds were left in the game. Owens sealed the win with a pair of free throws with four ticks remaining.

Cheatle had 14 points to lead the Huskies, while Nenstiel and Owens each added 12 points for the Huskies, now 4-12.

Terry scored a game-high 27 points for the Lock Haven, now 2-13, with Chritiano getting 11 points.

Bloomsburg will be back in action Wednesday at Kutztown starting at 8 p.m.
