Bloomsburg Rally Falls Short in Loss to Kutztown

KUTZTOWN --Bloomsburg University's Matt Jefferson (Philadelphia/Engineering and Science) and Billy Bryan (Denver/Reading Holy Name) combined for 44 points, but the Huskies fell to Kutztown, 85-79, on Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game.

The Huskies trailed by 17 points in the opening half, but rallied to take a three-point lead in the second half only to see Kutztown stage a rally of its own and pull out the win.

Kutztown was red hot in the opening nine minutes of play opening a lead of 27-10 behind nine points from Frank Moultrie and six from Bruce Hall.

However, the Huskies chipped away at the deficit and pulled to within four at the break, 38-34, by closing with a 24-11 run of its own. Bryan scored eight points and Jefferson four for Bloomsburg in the comeback.

Bloomsburg then took its first lead since 2-0 when Seve Cunningham (Wrightsville/Eastern York) hit a jumper with 16:46 to play in the game to give the Huskies a 46-45 advantage. The teams traded leads for the next seven minutes before the Golden Bears went in front for good on a pair of free throws with 8:49 to play. Kutztown later stretched the lead to nine points, 78-69, before the Huskies got four points from Jefferson and a layup from Cunningham to get back within three at 78-75 with 2:25 left.

The Golden Bears, though, hit seven of eight from the foul line in the final 1:30 of the game to hang on to the win.

Bloomsburg, 5-18, 1-7 PSAC East, got 23 points from Jefferson and 21 and 11 rebounds from Billy Bryan in the loss.

Kutztown, 14-9, 5-3 PSAC East, was led by Bruce Hall with 23 points, while Moultrie added 21.

The Huskies host Cheyney on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
