Bloomsburg Takes Part in NABC Reading Program

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team recently took part in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Reading Program. The program is an annual national literacy program sponsored by The National Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Huskies stopped by St. Columba School in Bloomsburg as part of the program reading to members of the pre-school, kindergarten and first grade classes. “This is a great opportunity for the young men in our program to influence the youth of the area in the importance of reading, said Bloomsburg University head coach Terry Conrad. “We all know that when children can read, they have a better chance of being successful. We wanted to demonstrate that to the children of St. Columba.”

“We think this is a great way to serve young people,” said Jim Haney, NABC Executive Director. “To have the college coaching community involved with such an important educational issue truly provides a winning combination.”

Taking part in the program for Bloomsburg were Andrew Jerry, Marion Rose, Matt Gosselin, Ryan Nenstiel, Jeremiah Long, Billy Bryan, Bob Nenstiel, Ernest Cherry and Rick Womack

The NABC Reading Program was founded to assist the literacy movement in America. The program hopes to motivate and encourage children to read for enjoyment as a lifelong practice. The program will also allow collegiate basketball players to serve as needed role models to the youth of their community.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches was founded in 1927 and currently claims approximately 5000 members from NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA, junior college, and high school. Since its inception, the NABC has continually worked to further the best interests of the game of basketball as well as the players and coaches who participate in the sport.
