Bloomsburg Edges Clarion; Win Sixth Straight Game

BLOOMSBURG- Buddy Rose (Philadelphia/ Mastbaum Tech) scored nine second half points to lead the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to a thrilling 67-65 victory over Clarion University on Sunday afternoon. First year head coach John Sanow is now 6-0 as coach of the Huskies. It is the best start for a first-year head coach in the history of the school.

The game was tightly contest throughout the first half with both teams exchanging leads several times. The Huskies took a 38-34 lead into the locker room. Mike Cheatle (Lower Gwynedd/ Hatboro-Horsham) led the Huskies with 16 first-half points.

In the second half the Huskies went on an early run and extended their lead to 11 points with 15:16 remaining in the game after Jon DeJesus (East Stroudsburg/ Lackawanna CC) converted two free throws.

However Clarion responded with an 18-6 run over a ten minute span and took the lead 55-54 with 5:55 remaining. In the final minute, with the game tied 65-65, Rose drove down the base line and scored on a lay-up to give the Huskies a 67-65 lead.

The Golden Eagles had one last shot to tie the game with 11 seconds remaining. Clarion's Chris Buchanan jumper was off the mark but Clarion's Ricky Henderson grabbed the rebound with two seconds remaining. Henderson then went up for a lay-up but the ball rolled out as time expired.

Cheatle led the Huskies with 16 points, while Matt Jefferson (Philadelphia/ George Washington) scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Niko Traykov (Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria/ St. Francis, NY) added 10 points and had three steals.

Bloomsburg will host District of Columbia on Saturday at 3 p.m.
