Jones Nets 29 in Huskies Loss to Cheyney

BLOOMSBURG-- Senior Nick Jones (Rosedale, NY/Hillcrest) scored a season-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team lost to Cheyney University by a score of 92-81 on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves started quickly in the game opening up a 13-4 lead with 12:53 to play in the first half. The Huskies cut the margin down to three with 10:43 to play in the half, 17-14, with Jones scoring seven straight points for Bloomsburg to lead the rally. But, the Wolves would once again catch fire and stretched their lead to 20 at the break, 48-28.

In the second half, Cheyney took its biggest lead of the game, 63-41, with 12:20 to play on a layup from Domenique Curry. Bloomsburg, though, chipped away at the lead using a 23-13 run to narrow the gap to 10 points, 74-64, on a layup from Jeremiah Long (New Columbia/Mifflinburg). Leading the Huskies' rally was Jones and Buddy Rose (Philadelphia/Mastbaum Tech) with eight each.

Cheyney pushed the lead back to 17 points at the 3:06 mark to go before the Huskies would once again come back and get to within 10. Back-to-back buckets off of turnovers from Drew Jerry (Philadelphia/Olney) and consecutive three-pointers from Rose cut the lead to 87-77 with 1:10 to play.

That would be as the close as the Huskies would get as Cheyney hit three of four free throws down the stretch to win by 11.

Jones netted a season-high 29 points and had eight rebounds for the Huskies, while Rose added a season-high 23 points and also had eight rebounds. Jerry scored nine points and had eight assists for the Huskies. Cheyney, now 14-6, 6-1 in the PSAC East, placed all five starters in double figures led by Edwin Braswell with 22 and Dawud Morris with 17.

Bloomsburg, now 8-13, 0-7 in the PSAC East, will play at Millersville on Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
