Men's Basketball Drops Opener

WILMINGTON, DE-- The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team dropped its season opener to Goldey-Beacom College (GBC) at the Wilmington College Tournament Friday night.
The Huskies held an early 14-6 lead in the game jumping in front behind the hot shooting of Niko Traykov (Bulgaria) who scored seven points in the first seven minutes of play. After Goldey-Beacom closed the gap to four, 22-18, the Huskies pushed its lead to 10, 33-23, on a pair of free throws by Drew Jerry (Philadelphia/Olney) with 1:41 left in the opening half. However, GBC used a 6-0 run to end the half to get within four at the break, 33-29.
In the second half, with the Huskies up by one, 37-36, GBC put together a 12-0 run over a three-minute stretch to grab a 48-37 lead with 13:06 to play. Adrian Miles keyed the run for Goldey-Beacom with eight points.
Bloomsburg would close the gap to two, 51-49, with 10:11 to play on a basket by Buddy Rose (Philadelphia/Mastbaum Tech). But, GBC later got a pair of free throws from Azeez Ellegood to lead by seven, 56-49, with 7:30 to play.
Twice in the final four minutes of play, Bloomsburg narrowed the lead back to two points. The first at 62-60 with 3:59 to play and the last time at 70-68 with 1:24 left on a three-pointer by Nick Jones (Rosedale, NY/Hillcrest).
But, in that final 1:24, the Huskies managed just two buckets by Rose, both in the final 15 seconds, while GBC hit a couple of baskets and three free throws to win by five.
Jones led the Huskies with 21 points, while Traykov scored 16 with Rose adding 14. For GBC, Samuel McDuffie scored 21 points.
The Huskies, 0-1, face Wilmington College at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
