Jones Powers Bloomsburg to Win over Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK--Nick Jones (Rosedale, NY/Hillcrest) scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to a 60-53 come-from-behind win over Slippery Rock on Saturday in men's college basketball action.

The Huskies started slow in the game trailing 7-0 in the first four and a half minutes of play. Bloomsburg came roaring back and took a 10-9 lead after Jones drained a three-pointer with 12:30 to go in the half. The Rock, though, rallied and went into halftime with a nine-point lead, 29-20.

Bloomsburg opened the second half with a 10-1 run to close the deficit to just a point, 31-30, with Jones scoring five of the points. But, once again, the Rock came back and lead by 10 points, 40-30, with 11:50 to play in the game.

At that point, the Huskies began their rally and were able to take a 45-44 lead with 7:09 to play on two free throws by Drew Jerry (Philadelphia/Olney). Later, with the score tied at 47-all, Jones hit a three-pointer and John Allen (Hatfield/North Penn) a layup giving Bloomsburg its biggest lead to that point, 52-47. Slippery Rock cut the margin back to three, 56-53, with 22 seconds left. However, Jerry hit two free throws and Buddy Rose (Philadelphia/Mastbaum Tech) added two more free throws in the final 20 seconds for the final margin of seven.

Jones finished 24 points, while Jerry added 11 and Rose had nine points and nine rebounds for Bloomsburg, now 8-5. The Rock, 2-11, got 16 points from Cory Somerville, while Erroll Robinson chipped in with 11.

The Huskies play at Edinboro on Sunday on 3 p.m.
