Huskies Drop to Cheyney

CHEYNEY- Bloomsburg University's Larry Webster (Elkton, MD/Elkton) scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but a dominant rebounding performance by Cheyney propelled the Wolves to a 64-51 victory over Bloomsburg on Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division game.
Bloomsburg attempted to grab the early momentum when Webster grabbed a Daniel Hoover (Lansdale/North Penn) miss and slammed it home, tying the game at two just three minutes into the half. From there, Cheyney would go on a 11-2 run to take a 13-4 advantage with 12:07 remaining in the first half. The Huskies would draw to within six when Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) nailed a jumper with 4:46 left in the first, but Cheyney would extend their lead back to nine, 29-20, after one half of play.
In the second half, a Michael Varanavage (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) three-pointer with 10 minutes remaining would narrow the Cheyney lead to 44-35, but Bloomsburg would come no closer. Cheyney would maintain a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.
Ruben Britt (Vorhees, NJ/Coppin St.) added 12 points for the Huskies, while Varanavage added seven. Hakeem Townsend led Cheyney with 20 points.
With the loss, Bloomsburg falls to 4-17, 1-7 in the PSAC East.
Bloomsburg returns to Nelson Field House on Wednesday evening when they host East Stroudsburg. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
