Varanavage Scores 16 in Loss to Edinboro

EDINBORO --The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team lost to Edinboro by a score of 94-78 on Sunday.
Edinboro jumped out fast in the game going on a 13-1 run over the first six and half minutes of play and led by 17 points at the break.
The Huskies, though, cut the lead back to 10 points at 47-37 after a three-point play from Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) with 17:05 to go in the game. Edinboro then pushed the lead back up to as many as 19 points before Bloomsburg came back once again.
Trailing by a margin of 83-69 with 2:08 to go, Michael Varanavage (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan), playing in just his second game, scored seven straight points and after a layup by Drew Jerry (Philadelphia/Olney) the Huskies trailed by eight at 86-78 with just under a minute to play. But Edinboro went 8-8 from the foul line in the last minute to win by a score of 94-78.
Varanavage finished with a career-high 16 points, while Jordan Wartman (Mahanoy City/Mahanoy Area) scored a career-high 15 points. Ronnie Benson (Harleysville/Souderton) and Ruben Britt (Voorhees, NY/Eastern Regional) both added 15 for the Huskies. Edinboro, 10-1, was led by Gil Cummings with 30 points, while Joe Jones added 20.
Bloomsburg, now 3-8, will play at home against Gannon on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m.
